I was kind of hoping they would incorporate JTK’s quirky and fun pauses in speech, like we know from the TOS. But perhaps that was more Shatner’s shtick vs. being a real character trait written into the story. Maybe someone knows for sure.
That was all Shatner. He’s given many different explanations over the years. That during the original series they were filming episodes at such a rapid pace that he had trouble remembering his lines and later in the movies that he continued to do so because Kirk had become known for his unusual delivery style. He’s claimed that it was something he developed early in his stage acting career as a way of keeping audiences engaged and paying attention. He’s also said that it was something he did without even being aware of it so who knows. It’s interesting to note that during interviews he doesn’t speak that way. Though he does pause occasionaly, it’s more thoughtful than for dramatic effect.
