That’s not correct. She got an audition because of her husband (it was a favour) and DePalma originally wanted her to be Chris Hargensen, the mean-girl character whom Nancy Allen wound up playing. De Palma then called Spacek again — out of courtesy and Spacek showed up in a dress she had since childhood with massive amounts of vaseline in her hair. DePalma cast her because she captured a “beautiful, but poor girl who everyone immediately fell in love with”. Also, I was commenting on Sissy Spacek herself when I wrote she’s not bland.
