I see it also as a really great metaphor for how I should be as sure as I can be, use my heart as well as my head, before I retaliate to an “assumed threat” at any level, to investigate, ask questions, be still, as best as I can, before I decide, reply, respond to another or I live with the fallout.
I think he was thinking one thing at the time. “They are not that stupid” “just a pissing contest so far,this is just some bullshit” and he waited till things should have touched down. I can only imagine what it would feel like to have the fate of the entire world in your hands.And then getting bitched at later by your superiors for saving their dumbasses.
