You Were Never Really Here (2017)

I first saw this when it premiered. I have been a “fan” of Joaquin Phoenix since “Signs”, “Her”, “Gladiator”, and before… he is an accomplished actor who designs his own career by playing characters, rather than becoming one in real life. He can change his physical form, mannerisms and even the way his eyes look either alert and engaged with life, or completely disenfranchised with life and in a world of his own. This film is one of his best; it is captivating, disheartening, confusing, brutal and lovely.
