At the time from memory something like 25k people tried to phone in, either via presenter or directly contacting BBC, as at time this was largely unheard of phenomena more so because ( at the time) people held BBC in some prestige.
As for number of persons outside house itself I don’t think even more popular reoccurring shows garnered those sort of figures for live public audience congregating in that manner more so for a singular one off television event of that nature.
