The Magician (2005)

I watched the “The Magician” because I really like “Mr. Inbetween”. This is basically the original, low budget predecessor of that series.

I can’t say I liked it as much, mostly because I’m not a fan of handheld cameras and it lacked as many dark funny moments that temper the realistic violence.

“Mr. In Between” has better production quality and more darkly funny moments. Moreover, the violent side of Ray’s life is tempered with his adoring relationship with his daughter and other humanizing elements. He becomes a very engaging anti-hero much like the character Dexter.

So I’d give this 3/5 as entertaining. That may be lower for those disturbed by the nonchalant character of the violence, or higher, for those less sensitive to that. “Mr. Inbetween” is easily a 4/5 or greater for me and I’m looking forward to the next season.

Cheers!

Scott Ryan is one of the most talented writers and actors to come out of Australia. He wrote, Directed and Starred in this movie which he also financed with $3K of his own money, later with the help of Nash Edgerton he got some seed money and made a better version of it which ultimately helped him land the Mr. In-between Contract with FX which made him a multi-millionaire. Talent and hard work still work.
