How does this compare to the series The Exorcist? Loved that show & was so sad they canceled it.

I read in the youtube link description this was supposedly a prequel to Evil Dead. It’s interesting because Bruce goes by ‘Bruce’ in this & dies in the end, whereas his girlfriend is the one that survives unlike in ED. Also this has a swamp chase scene where ED does not but the remake of ED does. Obviously this set the tone for the series though.

A werepire? A vampwolf? I didn’t know there could be such a fictional character.

What We Do in the Shadows: Interviews with Some Vampires (2005)

Didn’t know there was a short the movie was based on so this was interesting to watch. Nothing exceptional but if you’re a fan of the film & the series seeing this is good to see the origin.

Nine Perfect Strangers (2021)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Decided to give this a go solely on Nicole’s involvement, but didn’t realize the incredible rest of the cast involved. Regina Hall, Michael Shannon, Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Samara Weaving & Luke Evans? Half way through the 1st epi & I am hooked & creeped out! This is going to be a wild ride lol.

I was on the fence about watching this or not until Nicole Kidman`s character entered and stirred up the pot making it all interesting.

Agreed. I knew it would be good though if Nicole was in it & I gave it a chance. She’s the perfect villain! So creepy!

Debris (2021)

Funny name.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

It’s odd he used his rap name instead of his birth name. I guess probably he wouldn’t get the recognition w/his birth name. I certainly didn’t know it till someone above mentioned it. It’s been a long time since I’ve listened to his music.

Debris (2021)
Alien 1 points 3 years ago*.

lol. I wondered who names their kid Scroobius? His real name is David Meads, so apparently he renamed himself.

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

He’s was a UK rapper. Not sure if he still raps but I started laughing when I saw his name pop up in the credits. He was pretty good as a rapper.

Debris (2021)

Watched the pilot & rather impressed w/it. For a network series it’s pretty damn good. I was engrossed w/the storyline from the start & the main characters show some depth & personality w/room to grow. I’m looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Hopefully it will maintain it’s momentum that the pilot started!

Wow, a movie about a female surgeon, I can’t think of a single other movie or show that has one! Wish there were more!

Not a positive role though for a first female surgeon show.

Mike Patton & company are weird & wonderful in this excellent live document of their band Mr. Bungle. You might be sorry you watched this or you might be in the know & love their oddball brand of musical mayhem. Either way you’re in for a twisted surprise.

Amen that! I just loved seeing the chemistry with him and Eureka on the show. I hope the outcome of all things don’t effect their personal friendship too much.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

If it does I’m sure they’ll work it out & get over it. Eureka is the type to just be upfront & deal w/whatever needs to be dealt with. TKB seems like he might hold onto it awhile.

Yeah I love her too but it was a justified defeat. She was in the bottom most out of anyone, and she is wayyy to sensitive to be the next top all star. She lets her emotions get the best of her still and it reads in all that she does on the show… from how she conducts herself in the work room to how she performs… and even in untucked… prayers for TKB

High-Rise (2016)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Fascinating film w/Hiddleston, Moss, Evans & Irons that serves as a socio-political allegory for ‘70s era England that still rings true today. Excellent acting, set design & cinematography. Not a film for everyone though since there is barely a plot & some of the scenes might be shocking to some. The characters are what the film really hinges on, one of which is the high-rise itself. Worth seeing if you’re into art films.

Wellington Paranormal (2018)

The guys are equally bad in this series. The only characters I’d say that are more neutral or good are the spa woman, the son, & the wife of the wealthy young man. But there’s still time for them to prove otherwise lol.

The White Lotus (2021) S1 E3

Holy $h!t, this show is getting wilder, darker & funnier each epi. Perfect!

Kingdom (2014)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

One of the best ‘unknown’ series that deserves far more attention than it received back when it came out. Excellent drama w/Frank Grillo leading the stellar cast. Even though it’s set in the MMA world it is far more about the dynamics of the family involved in that world than the MMA. So don’t let the background setting keep you from watching it. If you have a weak stomache for violence or offended by swearing though, it may not be for you.

The White Lotus (2021)
augusts1 3 points 2 years ago.

Excellent series. It’s definitely a dark dramedy focusing on skewering the privileged wealthy class. First epi takes a bit to gain it’s stride in the 1st half but picks up in the last half. The actors all do an amazing job. 2nd epi really takes off. Definitely not for everyone though since it focuses more on character development & revealing their lives than plot driven.

There are plenty of humorous moments so far, but all played very seriously while addressing real issues. Lots of subtext & commentary on wealth & class as the characters enjoy or not enjoy life at an upscale resort.

Reservation Dogs (2021)
augusts1 9 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Watched the 1st epi.& it is pretty good. More drama than comedy but there’s definitely some funny moments. Great & interesting characters by the young cast. Beautifully shot too. Waititi co-created & exec produced it but didn’t direct. I’ll definitely keep watching.

Reservation Dogs (2021)

“Filmed entirely on the Muscogee Nation reservation in eastern Oklahoma, the network says the half-hour comedy is the first show on cable TV in which all the writers, directors and regular characters on the series are Indigenous.”

Love that, thanks for that info. Love Taika Waititi’s filmmaking style. His What We Do In The Dark movie & series enamored me to him forever. So I’m down to watch this!

snazzydetritus 1 points 2 years ago.

Ehh… Glad I watched, but I feel like after Irreversible (his career apex), each of Noe’s movies has been a stop on a downward trajectory

augusts1 1 points 2 years ago*.

I think Enter The Void is his career apex imo, although I enjoyed Irreversible which was my introduction to him. Admittedly ETV is lengthy but I loved it. I tend to enjoy character driven movies too, so a sparse plot isn’t a dealbreaker for me.

Carne (1992)
Alien 3 points 2 years ago*.

No, but I might.
They do all seem a bit bizarre.

augusts1 3 points 2 years ago*.

This is a good start since it’s short. His current movies are considerably longer than most films starting w/Enter The Void. So this would be a good primer to see if you even want to see his others. And yes, they can be bizarre. But I love unique movies.

Carne (1992)
Alien 3 points 2 years ago.

Excellent review. Lots of info. Thank you.

augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Oh thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful. Have you seen any of Gaspar Noe’s movies?

Carne (1992)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Rather shocking short debut film by Noe. But that’s to be expected w/his films. There’s a lot to unpack in this 40 minute run time. All his unique & signature filmmaking is present here to be developed further throughout his movies.

Noe’s films are not for the faint of heart & are often disturbing, so be forewarned. His stories are well worth the journey to the dark side of humanity though. Also, this story is further explored w/The Butcher in his follow up film I Stand Alone.

Climax (2018)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago.

Loved this film but I must say I am a Gaspar Noe fan & love all his movies. Having said that I acknowledge his style is not for everyone. His movies are character driven & lean on plot. Yet they are visually stunning & his characters are endlessly fascinating to me. This is no exception.

All of his movies involve characters who experience some type of traumatic experience & devolve into varying levels of chaos. Noe captures the dark side of humanity that many do not address which often is shocking to many. The fact that he does it w/stunning photography & unusual camera angles/techniques is icing on the cake.

Bonding (2019)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

So twisted, I love it. Definitely a VERY unique comedy. Not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. If you like unusual comedies that introduce you to worlds you never knew would fascinate you, then this is for you. It’s amazing how they fit so much into such short epis since they’re generally around the 15 - 20 min mark.

Affliction (1999)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago*.

Excellent movie that captures the ravages of substance abuse so well. Nolte & Spacek are stellar here as is the rest of the cast. Not an easy watch (especially if you’ve dealt w/substance abuse in one form or another yourself) but well worth it for Nolte & Spacek’s performances alone. This film truly deserves more attention & accolades than it has received even though it won an Oscar for James Coburn in a supporting role & a nom for Nolte.

The Platform (2020)
augusts1 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Very well done Spanish film. The Spanish seem to have a knack for more artistic film endeavors. This is not an exception. The acting is top notch as is the production design, directing, etc. If you’re looking for an easily explained movie then this is not for you. You will more than likely be left with more questions than you did going in.

It’s basically an allegory with several possible meanings/interpretations. What I got out of it is that The Hole/Platform & it’s levels represents life & society. We choose to commit ourselves to it when we are born. Each level is one quality of living. Life occurs and we can either choose to accept our lot or fight against the powers that be to hopefully improve ourselves. The film shows the goodness & the depravity that we as humans can rise or sink to in this life. This is the main meaning in my opinion. I think there are political & philosophical meanings as well. There is of course a lot of symbolism too, such as the young girl being ‘the message’ which to me would be a message of hope for survival of the future. She represents the hope for young people to change the societal systems that control us in The Hole. I’m sure I’ll be thinking about this movie for days and coming up with more ideas on the meaning of it down the road.

Pirate Radio (2009)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Great little indie film that more people need to see. I had forgotten about it till I saw a featured comment from HarryDurden here. I saw this a few years after it came out from a recommendation of a friend. The ensemble cast is amazing & the film gives you a look at a part of UK radio broadcasting history that I didn’t know about. It’s dramatic, comedic, thoughtful & suspenseful. Just a well made film that everyone will enjoy.

The Block Island Sound (2021)
augusts1 1 points 2 years ago.

Excellent indie horror film. It leaves you w/more questions than you started out with & leaves a lot to one’s own imagination since there’s a lot of implied horror. Not much is explained, so if you dislike being left w/few answers, this is probably not your type of movie. I however love this style.

The film really drew me in from the start & made me think about what was happening. If you like fast paced, jump scare horror you won’t find it here. It’s a slow burner that focuses on developing the characters & especially the main character. But that is what drew me in & kept me watching. The acting is quite excellent as well as the rest of the production. Worth a watch if you’re into slowly paced indie horror.

Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Quite good & dark, dark, dark. I’m really not keen on sitcoms but this is a critique of the genre while simultaneously spoofing the genre. Lots of psychological intrigue w/the main character played by Annie Murphy who played the sister on Schitt’s Creek, another sitcom. This is miles apart from SC though.Looking forward to seeing how things progress as the show goes on.

Drag Race Down Under (2021)

I love this show but I cant stand myself for supporting a scripted and rigged competition. Its obvious that Art Simone must paid its way back into the show ..coz it was eliminated on episode 2. So why the hell is it back for?????
And nobody has asked it why or mentioned its return….
Coz its all rigged and they are trying to get Art Simone to win ! duh !
It doesnt deserve it !

augusts1 4 points 2 years ago.

Drag performers go by their character’s pronoun of’she’ when in drag usually & often out of drag too. Using ‘it’ is not used unless a queen specifically states that is what they want to be referred to as their preferred pronoun, just so you know.

Lovecraft Country (2020)
hic 3 points 3 years ago.

If you guys like this show, try 30 COINS (30 Monedas) a Spanish series. The story is basically that the 30 coins that Judas betrayed Jesus for are now cursed and strange things/monsters begin to appear. It’s like a cross between exorcist and Lovecraft. Give it a try.

augusts1 1 points 3 years ago.

Oh sounds fascinating. Not heard of it before. I like Spanish movies but not watched a series.Thanks.
