Tom Segura: Sledgehammer (TV Special 2023) (2023)
augusts1 4 points 9 months ago.

Tom is pretty darn funny & at the top of his game here. Do I like other comedians better & think there are ‘better’ comics out there, yes, but comedy is subjective. I think Deon Cole, for one, is a better joke writer imo. Tom is really great at telling stories. Just his mannerisms, facial expressions & tone of voice are funny enough. But his brand of storytelling is interesting & entertaining, giving us a look into his personal life & musings on life in this crazy world. Tom’s humor/language is pretty colorful though & not for everyone, so proceed w/caution.

think it’s probably better to, trying to explain things to my wife was annoying and she’d seen the first one but didn’t remember much about it lol

augusts1 1 points 9 months ago.

Ok, thanks.

Bird Box: Barcelona (2023)
Birdsforme 2 points 9 months ago.

I don`t think I did see the first one. It did not refer to anything previous, so I would say it is not important to see the first to enjoy this one.

augusts1 1 points 9 months ago*.

Ok, thanks for replying. Good to know. I’ve meant to see the 1st one but just didn’t get a round to it. Thinking if I watch this it will motivate me to watch the 1st lol.

Bird Box: Barcelona (2023)
Birdsforme 3 points 9 months ago.

Contrary to IMDB I thought it was a solid four out of five stars. At the very end I understood what the title was about. Worth a watch, in my opinion.

augusts1 1 points 9 months ago.

Did you see the 1st one? I’ve not & wondering if I need to see it in order to enjoy this one. Thanks in advance.

Interesting concept for a dating show. It’s going to get even more interesting as it goes on w/the drama near the end of the epi. Intrigued after the 1st epi since was well done w/fascinating people

Beautifully nuanced dance scene between the two leads. Their reactions to one another are so intimate you feel what they are feeling. Just perfect.

What Is a Woman? (2022)
SkidMarxTheSpot -2 points 10 months ago.

Of course I watched the doc. It was excellent. If this subject matter is of any interest to you than I would highly recommend it.

augusts1 1 points 10 months ago.

Not everyone watches something before commenting, that’s why I asked (although I’ve been guilty of doing that myself at times). I did watch a half hour- 45 minutes of it after my previous comments. It is a well done doc & Matt makes some good points but I do not agree w/most of them. I’ve meant to finish watching it but I feel there are other movies/shows far more worthy of my time . . . .

The Bear (2022)
augusts1 1 points 10 months ago.

2nd epi is vastly superior to the 1st episode which took awhile to get it’s groove & for me to figure out what was going on. The chemistry amongst the cast really jelled in the 2nd episode & it got even deeper than the 1st epi. There’s definitely some major issues happening & I’m looking forward to the rest of this series. Short 1/2 hour epis make this an easier watch since they go quick.

Drag Me to Dinner (2023)
SpecialEFX 1 points 10 months ago.

Hundreds…. found the jokes juvenile and pedestrian. Seen it all before. Couldn’t tell if they all were desperate for the money or the attention.

augusts1 1 points 10 months ago.

Hard to create something new & innovative that hasn’t been done in the drag scene since drags been around for centuries. To each their own though.

Drag Me to Dinner (2023)
augusts1 1 points 10 months ago.

I enjoyed this. It was definitely fun & funny. Neil Patrick & his hubby are always great as is Bianca. I’m not familiar w/Haneefa Wood though. Not too keen on the actual host in Murray Hill. He didn’t have much warmth/likability to them.

This show is seriously so good. Really goodstory-telling, I’m impressed! It gives me twiligt zone vibez and From vibez, as well. I actually found this show in the comments of From and am so effing thankful!

augusts1 2 points 11 months ago.

It was really good. Don’t get your hopes up for Season 2 though. It’s nowhere near as good as Season 1 imo.

I love a good drag show but this was a real disappointment.

augusts1 2 points 11 months ago.

Any particular reason?

The Essex Serpent (2022)
augusts1 1 points 11 months ago*.

Finally getting to this. Excellent period monster tale. Slowly building the world w/plenty of fantastic acting from Claire Danes, Hiddleston & cast, very eerie yet gorgeous visuals & music add to the great storytelling. If you like old Victorian or gothic horror, this emulates it quite well with the themes of a supposed rogue serpent who has surfaced to terrorize the town of Essex in England where a wealthy recent widow & the town vicar try to ease the growing fear & paranoia of the locals. What could possibly go wrong?

The Ritual (2018)
augusts1 1 points 11 months ago.

Amazing acting, atmosphere & music all build a gradual tension in this film. Stunning cinematography of the Swedish landscape also helped keep me mesmerized to the end. Worth a look if you’re into horror.

My fave Tarantino. Amazing all around. The fight in the Asian garden in the snow is just pure cinematic bliss.

Ooo season 2 will be out 7/21/23. Season 1 is great. Acting, production design, script is all excellent and a bit of everything for most, although some may not like the more ‘adult’ themes & good language. So proceed w/caution.

The Watcher (2022)

Peacemaker (2022)
Themoo 3 points 11 months ago.

It’s easy to recommend - it’s where we first see John Cena’s performance as Peacemaker, and it’s a hell of a ride. Only connection the film had to the trash that came before it in 2016, is they retained Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

augusts1 2 points 11 months ago.

BTW I saw the 2016 Suicide Squad movie. I liked it & would say it was far from terrible but to each their own. Not seen the newer version yet but will watch it.

Peacemaker (2022)
Themoo 2 points 11 months ago.

He got that wrong btw. It’s not in any way shape or form connected to 2016 Suicide Squad. That is a TERRIBLE film, that nearly ended careers. It’s based on James Gunn’s correction to that film, 2021’s “THE Suicide Squad”.

augusts1 1 points 11 months ago.

LOL, thank you for that info./correction.

Peacemaker (2022)
greyfur 2 points 11 months ago.

Ahhh, that’s a shame…

augusts1 2 points 11 months ago.

IKR? Cena really makes this show.

Peacemaker (2022)
augusts1 4 points 11 months ago*.

According to the internet a 2nd season for this show has been postponed according to James Gunn the director. The earliest could be 2024, the latest 2025. He is working on two other shows, Superman: Legacy & Waller starring Viola Davis reprising her role of Amanda Waller. Waller will actually continue where Peacemaker left off w/much of the cast of Peacemaker continuing their roles in Waller. So reading between the lines it seems what is being said is we’ll get a ‘2nd season’ kinda sorta of Peacemaker earlier just w/o Cena in the show Waller w/Viola as the main character. Very interesting. Here’s the link & I left a space after the https : https ://thedirect.com/article/peacemaker-season-2-release-date-james-gunn

Peacemaker (2022)

Realize this is a good show based on mindless scifi humor but this show will make more sense if you FIRST watch the movie “Suicide Squad (2016)”,since PeaceMaker is kind’a based on the Movie

For anyone wondering: The song is “Do Ya Wanna Taste It.” The band is Wig Wam. And if you dig what Wig Wam is selling, I sincerely recommend checking out a band called The Darkness.

The Darkness is awesome. Not heard of WW, will check them out.

Lamb (2021)
augusts1 2 points 11 months ago.

Quite excellent but not a film for the masses due to it being VERY slow paced. The movie takes it’s time developing the characters & letting the world they live in unfold at it’s own pace. The two actors playing the coupled farmers (Noomi Rapace of The Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo movies is one & the other I’d not seen before) give very nuanced, natural performances.

The movie revolves around a central mystery that the childless farm couple discovers through their daily life of maintaining their sheep & the farm they live on. This is a horror film but it is far from the stereotypical Hollywood horror movies. It does not rely on usual horror conventions at all so don’t go in expecting them. I do not recommend this for horror fans who are into blood/gore since there is little of those here. If you like nice neat answers to the questions raised in this you will be sorely let down since it raises more questions than it answers. I have no problem w/that since I love movies that get me thinking about the premise of the film & the ideas it brings up. If you’re into art films then you may very well enjoy this.

Simulant (2023)
greyfur 9 points 11 months ago.

Well, I’ll be darned! Usually, in the morning, it’s become kind of a habit of mine to pop in here first thing with my first shot of coffee and see what’s up, what new movies have posted, and if anything has come up on my watch list. Something easy enough for what’s left of the mush in my skull to deal with until the coffee kicks in, and low and behold, I see this has links!

Had an air date of June 2nd, 2023, and we are not even there yet, and had this on my ‘Plan to watch list’, as the trailer looked pretty good, and I like my Science Fiction.

I honestly couldn’t be happier. Not sure when I’m going to be able to watch it, and have no idea how the linkers pulled it off, but not going to ask questions either. Don’t need to know how the magic worked, sometimes it’s best to just not ask questions, and just say ‘thank you’ and be happy..🥳

augusts1 2 points 11 months ago*.

US movies are often released in foreign countries before the US to see the public’s response, how they will fare there in the box office & to tweak the marketing ahead of US releases among other reasons.

Daughter (2023)

Abduction, punishment, total loss of freedom, confinement, total obedience, a creepy feel and horrible screechy music. That is the summery of Daughter and I really wonder why it was not listed as horror.

augusts1 1 points 11 months ago.

‘horrible screechy music’ After reading your description & watching the trailer I must say I rather like the music in it. It was quite suspenseful & helped create a very tense/creepy atmosphere. Love horror movies so I’m going to give it a chance.

Yes they do. I’ve seen a short doc awhile back that detailed some of this crapola where POC were featured in circuses & mocked & ridiculed for being less than they really are. Just horrendous.

Has anyone watched this and been able to understand the Spanish, Italian and such in it? I want to give it a go, but it seems like I might be missing a lot. If it isn’t a big deal I am going to watch it. If it is I will wait for a better copy, with subs if I am lucky.

Obscure indy that gives an air of surrealism by avoiding quick-cut edits & instead uses pauses & soundtrack to manipulate emotional tone & mood.

It’s low budget, but it’s a nice impression of mental condition & personal worth. Rhea Seehorn & Jim do a good job.
