For Hallmark Christmas silliness, this was surprisingly refreshing. Great for an indulgent Sunday afternoon on the couch in thick socks and jammy pants with your love.

I don’t feel like I’m watching NCIS Sydney, 3 episodes in, its Americans in Australia with the odd Ozzie thrown in, its ok watchable, same old same old, will see what happens down the line…..

It’s so shocking it definitely causes a jolt of disbelief. Personally could care less about celebrity personals, but it’s different if it’s severe.

You’re not wrong.

Leave the World Behind (2023)

Our problem with this isn’t that it’s a lift from The Happening, it’s that Julia is in it. This is a chick who drove her sister to suicide then had the nerve to say to her family that it had to happen & she was happy that it happened. Like Mel Gibson’s antisemitism, there’s just no coming back from that. No amount of words will make it right. Some of these celebrities have to be left behind & she’s one of them.

JadeEnigma 3 points 5 months ago.

I was unaware of this. I’ll look it up, thank you.

lol … Did you watch M. Night’s “The Happening”? This was a huge mistake, along those lines and certainly borrowing, if not stealing, from the premise of “nature fighting back”. Gosh we were just flabbergasted at how awful it truly is. I hope you enjoy it. ♥‿♥

JadeEnigma 4 points 5 months ago.

Oh no!~ I do remember The Happening, and I remember trying to watch it three times to understand it better, and failing, mostly, each time. Still, I like Julianne and Ethan, so I will watch this for them, and come back with more detailed thoughts then :-P

Who’s this ‘we’ you’re deciding to represent? Have you heard every word everyone ever spoke to another person? No? Didn’t think so. I’ve heard the line before. Not only in the classic sitcoms but knowing it from this first. Don’t project your ignorance onto others and then play the victim when you’re corrected by those who know more.
No thanks, and worst :) x

C’mon folks, let’s keep it all civil, and pertinent to the film. Casting aspersions on your fellow users is against the rules and can get you in trouble.

I live in a southern state but live in the northwest corner and we are more open minded in this corner of the state. In fact, the rest of the state looks down on us because we are open minded. Our governor is trying to make it difficult for minorities and has passed some new laws that deal with what can be taught like in other states. My state also has a huge Latino population and the governor is trying to get laws passed that will affect them too. I grew up with Native Americans and it seems it doesn’t matter, if you’re not white, you’re discriminated against. Why are we going backwards? Granted, we still had/have a lot of work to do on discrimination, but it has become even harder. My brother recently asked me where our parents were born, he wants to get a passport and a special type of drivers license. He is gay and he is so terrified for his safety if the former president wins (I refuse to type his name in). A preacher in Texas has made the comment that all gays and lesbians need to be rounded up and shot in the back of the head. The man running for the gop has so many people who would do this. I told my brother he could move to Canada but I need to tell him he’ll need a certain type of visa if he plans to stay for a long time. I know a lot of people made the same comment in 2020, that they’d move out of the country if he wins. This time I think a lot of people will actually move out of the country if he wins. Sad, so sad.

JadeEnigma 1 points 5 months ago.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. My partner and I live in a southern state as well, but we do own land in Canada, and as a Canadian I can take her with me without any trouble, and we probably will if that happens.

You can see the push now in our public school systems to ensure that our children are unaware of the ugly parts of our history and how discriminatory practices still persist in so many ways. They would have our kids oblivious to the evils of our past and present so that those sins can continue now and in the future.

JadeEnigma 3 points 6 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I certainly can and it makes me ill. My partner works for a non profit providing grants and support to educational facilities, and apparently, in some states where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not allowed if you want state funding, they’ve had to come up with code words to hide them from any official paperwork. It’s horrible.

This was a difficult and triggering episode to watch, but worth the effort. The way minorities have been treated by a supremacist colonizing culture is shown without holding much back. Such things need to be shown, however, less we think we’re free from such things even now.

I sometimes do that when I see other people have given it a one star rating and I know there is zero chance they have actually watched it yet, just to balance things out. Fingernails (2023)
JadeEnigma 2 points 6 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I don’t normally write anything but positive reviews here, mostly because there are plenty of folks who do that already and are much better at the negative review thing than I am, but sometimes you just gotta warn people about things. I feel this is one of those times.

This film is an independent, low-budget release made in Toronto. None of those things make it bad, and in fact there are many really good films with those same qualities. What makes this one different is the really oddball premise it sets for an alternate present-day where you and your partner can be tested to see if you are both in love with the other, or just one, or neither is. The test requires the use of an entire fingernail, however.

An interesting idea, but I don’t think the potential was fully explored, and the primary story arc seemed to be about one woman’s search for the meaning of love, with whomever she found it. It seemed rather convoluted and dreary, to be honest. As much as we tried, we could not make it to the end. So I’m willing to admit that maybe it saves itself in the end. If it does, I’m not sure that would have been enough.

Go in with caution.

This was a brilliant episode. It does require your full attention for sure, but the stylised representation of both time and thought and memory is very well done. Was that a deal with the devil? Did she really sleep with her boss after all?

The Marvels (2023)

You can say you loved, liked or hated this, opinions very wildly… In my opinion, it’s garbage… I will say this though; The Marvels has the WORST opening weekend debut in MCU history… See that for what you will…

JadeEnigma 7 points 6 months ago*.

Okay. There have been some wonderful films that have had similar showings as The Marvels on their opening weekends, but were wonderful none-the-less. But as Derp says above, taste is a strange thing.

The Marvels (2023)
JadeEnigma 5 points 6 months ago*.

I LOVED this. Given the reviews here and elsewhere I expected it to be mediocre at best, but it was both funny and sad when it was meant to be, had a believable story that fully engaged me, and featured characters I was already invested in and became even moreso here. Having watched Ms Marvel (you HAVE to watch it!) I already knew Kamala and her family. My appreciation for them and their dynamic only grew.

Highly recommended!

Oh wow, based on the novel! The original miniseries was okay, but you know, 70’s made-for-tv and all that. This looks like it will be great!

We began watching this last night, and although only three episodes in, it has hooked us solidly. The characters are wonderfully engaging and it didn’t take long for us to invest in them fully. Perhaps when this plays out we may feel differently, and I will revisit this review if we do, but for now I will recommend this completely.

Deadwood: The Movie (2019)
JadeEnigma 1 points 6 months ago.

Interesting thing; I rewatched the series and then went straight to the movie, yesterday, with the series still fresh in my mind. It was jarring, to be honest. It’s almost as if they’re all trying too hard to recapture who they played before and it’s not working for many. I love this movie, I really do, but I think rushing straight into it as I did from the show without a bit of time as a palette cleanser was not the best thing to do.

Rather fun, it has Boom Boom Bill Mumy before Lost In Space (You’re a bad man! A very bad man!), Dawn Wells as an extra right before Gilligan’s Island, Dick’s brother Jerry Van Dyke (who turned down the role of Gilligan - for which he kicked himself over lots). He plays a non- Scruggs style banjo of Blackbird. The story is centered around a lovely Connie Stevens with a rogue Robert Conrad & also has a rosy-cheeked Stephanie Powers. It’s a cool bedroom style comedy with some dramatic elements.
