Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E2
RainbowJingle 12 points 2 years ago.

2.5/5 I know this will sound negative, but for me this episode was over-saturated with the crews emotions, their emotional responses and processing their emotions with each other.
This has its place, but almost every character was processing emotionally at the expense of pace, narrative and as a result the tone suffered.
I’ve enjoyed watching this series so far, but I can’t see how the show is going to warrant decades of rewatches as per 90s Berman era Trek.

I think this was misnamed, it really should be called Star Trek Burnham. I watch this only because this is where the franchise has landed. Very PC. The crew spend too much time being in touch with their respective sensitive sides. Dare I say it but like a lot of these great old stories it has been usurped in the usual way which I don’t need to spell out. Come back Jim, Spock and Bones :)
Overall it is a good watch as it is high budget and the special effects are solid.
I’m looking forward to the next completely new iteration of Star Trek.

RainbowJingle 8 points 2 years ago.

Agree! Far too much emphasis on emotional processing at the expense of plot and narrative. Admire the tech and effects and general whizz-bang nature of it all, but doubt will be rewatching DISC for decades to come, as with 90’s era Trek and TOS. Also looking forward to SNW.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E4
RainbowJingle 3 points 2 years ago.

Glad to see more traditional elements eg away team get more than they bargained for, Captain stepping into a diplomatic role, ship-porn!

But for me this is an overall luke-warm experience. Too much character drama by which I mean excessive emotionality.

A life-long Trek fan, I’m along for the ride this season as new episodes air, however I honestly can’t see myself rewatching Discovery. 3/5

Top quality - a true Christmas classic movie 5/5

Ted Lasso (2020) S1 E2

Agree the fundamental premise is flawed, but Lasso is a great character and I’m sticking with this, as its giving me all the feels.

Next Level Chef (2022)
RainbowJingle 4 points 2 years ago.

Innovative format. Glad the producers are not focussing on emotional drama and do seem to be keeping culinary skills front and centre High stakes competition. Will be watching the season as it unfolds.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (TV Short 1965) (1965)

Can’t beat Charlie Brown Christmas for ALL the feels. Fave scene - dancing in the school hall. Unbeatable soundtrack, all in all a very sophisticated piece of TV and deservedly a classic.

And Just Like That... (2021) S1 E1
RainbowJingle 5 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Wonderful to watch the gals again as theycatch up with cultural movements of the day. Miranda is an exaggerated goofy hopeless fish out of water at college, which is not fully believable. Charlotte appears frozen in time, same outfits, hair and attitude, which is. Carrie is trying to keep it fresh and relevant,on an edgy sex-talk podcast with a non-binary host.

The outfits are fab, as the interiors and the lighting and make-up is very generous to our queens.

Samantha#s absence is dealt with in a hammy, meta manner - we won’t be seeing her, she’s definitely out and it’s of her choosing. Art imitating life!

The cast is consciously and emphatically more ethnically diverse than in the 90s which is welcome and while obvious, doesn’t feel over-contrived.

Best visual gag AND oneliner - Miranda swigging ‘purse wine’ during a recital. To get through ‘two hours of tween Mozart.’ Genuinely funny!!!

Dramatic moment with MR B was set up to be obvious, but gripping nonetheless. A grim start to the season, setting a dark tone, and letting us know there will be emotional depth to come, and big changes for Carrie.

I can’t be objective about SATC, and I’d be interested to know how this revival is generally received. I’m so happy to see them all again, even with the grim twist.

Yup - we are in for an embarrassment of riches. There looks to be new Trek episodes dropping on a weekly basis from hereon in - a renaissance period for the franchise.

I haven’t been a huge fan of DISC up to now, but am happy to watch along, and am excited for the new costumes and set designs etc. Also looking forward to SNW and of course the return of Lower Decks which is fast proving to be a true gem.

Malory Towers (2020)
RainbowJingle 3 points 2 years ago.

I read the original books as a child and was enthralled. This modern interpretation pulls off an amazing accomplishment- updated and true to modern day sensibilities, while faithful to the tone and ethos of the text. It’a an excellent teleplay. Top marks for Mallory Towers!

Love's Sweet Recipe (2021)
RainbowJingle 3 points 2 years ago.

Better than average Hallmark romcom. Thought the male lead was charismatic and nuanced.

Huge niggle - as a professional chef- neither of the main characters wash their hands before handling food and the female chef’s hair is loose and dangling. Rant over!

The Masked Singer (2019) S5 E10

GUTTEd that the Russian Dolls were unmasked. IMO they should have made it to the finals. I would have binned Chameleon whose performance was lacklustre, or piiglet.

Marry Me (2022)
RainbowJingle 3 points 2 years ago.

Excited for this - a big name, high production romcom in the same ilk as the noughties.

Wilson and Lopez are seasoned pros and I’m sure it will be a great movie for those of us who love the genre!

'Twas the Fight Before Christmas (2021)

Delusional & paranoid narcissist, bullying his neighbours.

Friends: The Reunion (TV Special 2021) (2021)
RainbowJingle 3 points 2 years ago.

Wow botox galore. I found that a bit distracting whilst understanding it is the norm in their industry. They did seem genuinely pleased to see each other and to have genuine emotions which is heartening.

Star Trek: Prodigy (2021) S1 E4

Two new Trek episodes in one week!!!

Love Hard (2021)

Wow - breathtaking. A true classic.

Star Trek: Prodigy (2021) S1 E2
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

An improvement over the pilot. Becoming more watchable. Great exposition/world building. Surprised at the in-depth treatment of the tech of Trek. Would be good to see some interaction with other aliens eg encountering a strange new world or alien ship next episode. 3.5/5

Home Economics (2021) S2 E9
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

This series has finally gelled for me. Sharp writing and warm emotion. Interesting, believable characters. Hope we’ll get a season 3!

Deck the Halls (2006)
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

I enjoy this movie a lot, it’s on my annual Christmas Movie rewatch. Great cast, plausible story and good production values. Soundtrack is worth mentioning. I don’t understand the poor ratings & reviews, I give this a solid 6.5/10

Star Trek: Prodigy (2021) S1 E3
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

Interesting to get a cliffhanger. Didn’t think that to be a feature of children’s programs. Show’s getting more and more watchable and Trek elements & values are becoming established.

Ted Lasso (2020) S2 E3
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

Golden.

Hacks (2021) S1 E2

Very watchable if predictable romcom fare.

Home Economics (2021) S2 E8

Slightly quirky, wholesome family sitcom, this series has grown on me. It’s taken two seasons for the characters and narrative to gel. 7/10

And Just Like That... (2021) S1 E6
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

Rught now I’m preferring this reboot to the original. Love the mature themes.

Home Economics (2021)
RainbowJingle 2 points 2 years ago.

Enjoyed the pilot, have a feeling the show could hit its stride. ABC family comedies are reliably wholesome so I’ll probably stick with it.

How I Met Your Mother (2005) S1 E20
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

First time watch. It’s taken 20 episodes to begin to care about the characters but I’m invested

Queenpins (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Highly enjoyable, intelligent & original movie.

A Kiss Before Christmas (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Enjoyed this a lot. Well cast with big names, and nice to see a more mature love story. Alternative time-line plot device worked well. Very watchable 4/5.

The Secret Sauce (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Above-average made for TV romcom. The usual plot and characterisation, but somehow quite alive and believable. Worth a watch 4/5.

Free Guy (2021)

Sweet movie, very watchable even for a non-gamer. Fundamentally a love story! Dude is a creation of comic genius!

Gilmore Girls (2000) S5 E1
RainbowJingle 1 points 3 years ago.

Wow so much drama. Tantalising! Has the feel of a season finale with all the suspense this episode has generated. Rory and Dean, Dean and Lyndsey, Emily and Richard, Luke and Lorelai.

Gilmore Girls (2000) S5 E15
RainbowJingle 1 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Great episode. So sad for Luke and Lorelai, clearly still in love. Rory gets raunchy!!! Feel sorry for Marty but he can’t compete with Logan.

Schmigadoon! (2021) S1 E1
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Cute, I’ll keep watching. Production values are high with fantastic costumes and choreography.

Schmigadoon! (2021) S1 E4

I’m all in for this show at this point. Characters demonstrating maturity, depth and growth. And I so love the delightful scenarios and costumes.

Malory Towers (2020) S1 E5
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

I am loving this series.

Ted Lasso (2020) S2 E6
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Great episode. Good narrative structure. We can see the various storylines heading towards resolution/climax.
Harmony and success for the team, and Ted has to acknowledge he needs to move beyond his issues, to support that success. Nate’s self empowerment and flash of genius.
And the most interesting for me - Boss Girl and her cyber pal, unexpected twist!

Land (2021)

Outstanding, deep peaceful movie. Sorry for what happened at the end, would have liked Edie and Miguel to have gotten together.

Christmas at Castle Hart (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Better than average Christmas romcom. Characterful setting steeped in local flavour. Despite the predictable plot, Lacey Chabert brings it home. 4/5

Mom (2013) S8 E18
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Heartwarming end to a fantastic series. Genuine emotion and depth of character, positive ending without excessive schmaltz. Will miss these gals!

Seasoned with Love (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Very charming romcom - despite the predictable formula the story comes to life with warmth and charm. Highly watchable!

The Lady Eve (1941)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Excellent, a true caper. Screwball comedy at its finest.

Call Me Kat (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

I really wanted to like this. As a Brit, I chortled my way through Miranda which at the time was in a class of its own and greatly loved.

I feel that the format and tropes needed radical changing not just to suit the US culture, but because Miranda aired in 2009 and the ideas are no longer fresh.

I agree that the essence of the character: a single cat loving woman in late 30s who is socially awkward with a gorgon of a mother and a quirky business with quirky pals and some slapstick, could have worked well as a traditional sitcom.

This needs stripping back of its meta moments and I’m sorry that I wasn’t even able to finish the pilot, not least as I adore Mayam and appreciate her being given a starring role.

Love, for Real (2021)
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

Entertaining and more intelligent than standard Hallmark fare. Spunky characters and a beautiful backdrop, lots of plot twists and none of the usual tropes!

Family Reunion (2019) S1 E1
RainbowJingle 1 points 2 years ago.

That was not terrible. I’ll try the next episode before committing though.

Million Dollar Listing: New York (2012) S9 E7

I know this is based on real life events but for me this is pure escapism! Loving it.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020)

I can’t believe how much I love this show after watching the pilot. What an amazing cast and postive concept. It’s pure joy!
