Cato Caldwell Douglass is overwhelmed by the suicide of his longtime friend and colleague, Paul Cummings. As Cato tries to make sense of his friend’s death, he recalls how they met in a college creative writing course after World War II, how their competitive friendship grew, and how difficult relationships and racism threatened to keep him from achieving his goal of becoming a writer. |
