Post breakup, a couple meets to exchange belongings and quickly becomes mired in the past when one invokes the hope of ‘The Great Gatsby’ in an unexpected contemporary light. Cutting between Adam and Rachel’s post-breakup reunion and their lives independent of each other, ‘Boats against the Current’ visits that place when you’re not yet over an ex-lover; you’re stuck in a melancholic pattern, a unique form of grief. The other is not dead, they are just living without you, and even help from Jay Gatsby can’t bring them back. Well, maybe Gatsby’s aura can, if just for a fleeting moment. |
