This personal documentary explores the life of Chinese immigrants in the Midwest, as seen through the eyes of Helen Fong Dare, an intrepid and unconventional pioneer who defied gender and cultural discrimination years before the rise of feminism and affirmative action in America. A first time filmmaker at the age of 71, Helen’s daughter, Nancy Tom, goes back to her parents’ village in China and retraces her mother and father’s route to and within the United States, first at Angel Island in San Francisco to Chicago’s Chinatown to the predominantly white neighborhood on Chicago’s northwest side. As she revisits her parents’ journey, she finds herself. |
