E’ la storia di Beppe, garzone di fornaio e orfano, fiorentino. Parte militare e a Catania fa amicizia con Cavalluccio. Gli fa da compare quando questi si fidanza con Maria Antonia e, quando Cavalluccio viene trasferito, la consola tanto da sposarla. Ma anche Beppe viene trasferito a Milano e la solitudine è dura da sopportare, così Beppe si sposa con Lucia.
