Remember, this was in Toronto CANADA, not the U.S. They were a lot less racist against blacks, but since it was predominantly Catholic at that time, they were very prejudiced against gays. They were also racist against their indigenous people. Still, it’s not true to history, but then, it’s based on a series of cozy novels, so what do you expect? Fantasy, all of it.
I get that, I am old and Canadian enough to get frustrated by the current culture trying to change past cultures. Canada was/is incredibly racist as well. I don’t believe that even fantastical stories that whitewash the past have any real purpose.
