Raised by Wolves (2020)
marino4ever 11 points 3 years ago*.

The first 3 episodes were very good. A promising start.

The two leads, Amanda Collin (Mother) and Abubakar Salim (Father) are fantastic. Their characters and performances command attention at all times. I’m not entirely sold on the central conflict of the story, as it felt heavy handed. I hope it justifies itself in the long run, although I have my doubts. Still, I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

expresso 3 points 3 years ago*.

I thought about what you said. Yeah. I think the heavy-handed-ness is a throwback to classic Original Star Trek. Think William Shatner and We Are Making This Point By Hitting You With A 2x4. In other words, it’s (glorious) melodrama. To me people are reacting exactly the same way as when the Witcher came out (how dare you not be serious !!! with my TV) and that is refreshing because we all have too much deadly serious on our plates now.

Classic Agatha Christie whodunit. With more oomph in the writing and acting this could rise above - satisfying binge but not a two-fer. The last episode caught me off guard and that was fun :)

When it comes to playing scientific roles, Barbara Sukowa is the best! This type of film shouldn’t exist without her participation. Best remembered from the TV series “12 Monkeys.” Weird ‘cause with the accent, you’d expect her to be the evil scientist but, when I see her, I feel that everything is under control. Of course, this was only minutes into the 1st episode so, we shall see!

Love her and loved 12 Monkeys - I have binged that show at least three times.

Black Death (2010)

This is an overlooked and underrated movie carried by a surprisingly great cast - Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Carice van Houten, well-written and acted and some nice unexpected twists. A good watch if you like medieval / good and evil / supernatural stories. 8/10

Every now and then I remember that Alan Tudyk is not an alien, he’s that good. This is the funniest episode since the first season!

Lupin (2021)
expresso 4 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This is the comic book version of Lupin and I am there for it. Omar Sy has jeu d’esprit coming out of his pores. You either like Omar Sy or you don’t but he’s the kind of actor you want if you’re making a comic book Lupin. The Lupin fanbase are just as obsessed about canon and continuity as every MCU comic-head. A lot of them are not thrilled that this was updated from 19th century Paris society to modern day Paris and that Lupin was reimagined as a black character. 19th century Lupin spends years mastering disguise and deception to avoid being recognized while he’s pranking his society peers and settling scores through elaborate schemes. Comic book Lupin has tech and attitude, the mastery not so much. To me, he’s a classic flawed superhero. He’s sloppy and foolish and sentimental and he ghosts on the people who care about him. He escapes all consequences because the writers give him improbable lucky breaks he shouldn’t get, to save his butt for the next issue. Nobody in the Paris of this Lupin looks closely at a black man and he plays that to advantage. He’s right in front of the people constantly searching for him in broad daylight. His disguises aren’t really all that good. He’s just not a suspect because his superpower is his skin. You can be offended by the heavy-handed attempt to make you feel bad about racism, but he has a lot of fun with it and that’s pretty hilarious. If you were looking for classic Arsene Lupin or hoping for a sophisticated ‘Thomas Crowne Affair’ type heist-and-caper story, this show is going to disappoint you.

Justified: City Primeval (2023) S1 E3
expresso 4 points 9 months ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

What I’m noticing is the complete lack of bodacious loquacious articulatin’ in the dialogue, in this spinoff from the original Justified. We tend to think of Boyd Crowder as the grandiloquent one but the quality was so high and consistent: everyone in that show had colorful dialogue (notably Eva). Those scripts were at their best in Justified when Boyd and Raylan were sparring verbally, and Raylan gave as well as he got - but everybody down all tiers of the cast and second and third sub-plots had dialogue that sang. Same group, same show runners: all the witty repartee seems to have been lost in the decade in between. Those kinds of comments in this series are few and far between, and they fall like a thud compared to the previous outing. Raylan still has that fire in the belly (and the eyes) but seemingly no sense of humor, probably sucked out of him by the less-than-2-dimensional daughter.

I agree with the consensus on here - she’s not an actor - but more importantly, they’ve given her nothing to work with except “sniveling brat.” I’m convinced by the character and I see why “sniveling brat” could have been a good choice here, it’s sadly very realistic for a situation like this where one parent phones it in out of guilt. I know several kids that are as screwed up, uncooperative and self-destructive as Willa. But they’ve given her a repetitive 100-word vocabulary of snivel, and her delivery lacks the urgency of really feeling even the most insipid of childish emotions (maybe because, as someone noted, she’s 20 and not 15, and the dialogue is more suited for a 7 year old). It’s as if Beavis and Butthead were dredged out of Cartoonville to write lines for a girl they hated from class. Adding to that mismatch, as a character she’s nowhere near smart enough to be his daughter. Her father is in law enforcement, and she really sees danger nowhere? She doesn’t have any of his flip language or sass? Even the most talented actress would have nothing to work with here.

When you give Timothy Olyphant good lines to sling (see Deadwood) he will deliver and then some. I feel sorry for Elmore Leonard (‘s estate). Here’s hoping she actually stays on the plane (PLEASE) and if this has enough legs to carry it to a second season, she is nothing other than a device to deliver occasional offside plot complications from Florida.

Some of the supporting characters are well-drawn, but lots of cartooning here (the Albanian, c’mon please) including the main baddie who I’m sorry is just B-L-A-H.

Tales from the Loop (2020)
expresso 4 points 3 years ago*.

How did I miss this Dark + Twilight Zone? This is nuanced, inward-searching, emotional. The ambiguity is deliberately frustrating and overwhelming. It’s provocatively smart writing, and it is SLOW. If you’re looking for action this is not the show. Beautifully shot and acted. Peter Greenaway and Jonathan Pryce fans will like this. Tragically underrated on all the sites including this one. Kudos to a show released in the pandemic that made my brain work again 5/5

I enjoyed the show and love the character and actor, really liked to see Owen Wilson. That said hasn’t the future cop past self hunting future self trope been done to death already? When they said the person on the floor died from stab wounds I was really hoping the person that they where looking for would turn out to be Deadpool. Regardless I found it entertaining and worth watching.

The Winter King (2023) S1 E3
expresso 4 points 7 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

After The Last Kingdom I was really looking forward to this and it really suffers in comparison. It’s hard to make action/adventure slow and murky and hard to follow but here we are. As someone said, it seems like they lifted the names of characters from legend and the books, and that’s about it. Arthur has no skill or regard for the hearts and minds aspect of being a leader and three episodes in there’s nothing to like about him. He’s a corporate CEO who has no compassion and little to no persuasive ability, and makes no effort to explain himself to anybody (except to the warlord who just slaughtered the majority of his people literally hours ago). This is supposed to come across as edgy and brilliant but it comes across as reptilian and pitiless. It’s not just him, there’s not much complexity or depth to any of the characters as they are being potrayed, they’re one dimensional. I find myself seriously disliking and not feeling any sympathy for Nimue despite what she’s been through. I’m even more disappointed in the showrunners’ sloppy and careless effort at period representation, they just phoned it in and it shows. Corn on the cob did not come to the old world until 1500, why are they eating bread with no meat, metal was precious in the dark ages and would not be used to make water carrying cans, all liquid was stored in barrels, etc. This is Xena level bad, without the camp. I’ll probably give it one more epi and then go do a Vikings rewatch.

It would appear that someone is following me and another person around and giving us downvotes. was talking to someone else on another thread a day or so ago and he noticed it as well. We were both getting hit for no reason, just to hit us it would seem. I told him sometimes it was just like that with some people in places like this with comments sections.

There’s gonna be that one person no matter where you go that just has no intention of playing nice with others no matter what. All you can really do is just take a deep breath, remember you’re the adult in the room, and move on…

Why am I not surprised that Maher is an Elon fanboy? Other than the topics of religion and marijuana he sounds more and more like what a moderate conservative used to.

expresso 4 points 1 year ago*.

Didn’t watch it, don’t plan to watch it. The man already sucks enough oxygen out of the room and is the second richest person on the planet, he doesn’t need yet another free platform. 100% agree with you on Maher, except he’s gone farther right than moderate conservative straight into conspiracy theory. Maher snapped during covid. He started spouting fringe medical theories and anti-vaxxer tropes and now he has to touch base every week with every guest on how they feel about masking. It’s his safety blanket.

That’s enough of that stuff, please. What’s next? A Star Trek song and dance ep?

expresso 3 points 1 year ago*.

That’s exactly what this was. This is absolutely 100% authentic to the original franchise. All the people who keep complaining they are “puking a little in my mouth” like a bunch of performative tween drama queens, while they keep hatewatching this show, moaning about canon and wokeness in the comments, have apparently purged from their minds the several painful OST and TNG episodes where Kirk or Picard went to a planet and were forced to re-perform the American revolution, got stuck in a Holodeck reality, etc. That writing was every bit as bad as this. These kind of episodes are one big long eewww for me. I sit through them, to make sure I don’t miss anything important to the season arc.

It is unbeliveable. Million times better than the mediocre action movie it shares its name with. And it has absolutely nothing to do with that forgettable movie. Actually if I had to compare it to anything, it would be Killing Eve. Maya Erskine should be a A-lister movie star. She is that good.

The Winter King (2023) S1 E2
expresso 3 points 8 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

The combat so far is 100% accurate about what really happens anatomically when swords and lances and axes meet unarmored bodies of untrained warriors. It’s not often that depictions of medieval raiding and warfare are realistic enough to show that. Here nobody was able to heroically fight back, everyone was unshielded and unarmed, they just fell and shuddered and bled out. The vulnerability terrified me, it was incredibly effective. 5/5
