Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E6
Crenshaw1 4 points 2 years ago.

Yes, I’m aware, but there is not a Spock type character on the crew or main cast.

expresso 3 points 2 years ago.

Michael started out in Season 1 much more Vulcan. They’ve taken that out of her since the time jump and she’s less balanced and less interesting.

What we’re all missing is Georigeou.

Black Death (2010)

I don’t get why nobody mentions this movie when English folk horror is discussed. It is an underrated masterpiece of that small yet powerful subgenre.

expresso 3 points 4 years ago*.

One of the top folk horror IMO

Words cannot express how much I hated this. I’ll skip the musical too, thanks for the heads up.

It would appear that someone is following me and another person around and giving us downvotes. was talking to someone else on another thread a day or so ago and he noticed it as well. We were both getting hit for no reason, just to hit us it would seem. I told him sometimes it was just like that with some people in places like this with comments sections.

There’s gonna be that one person no matter where you go that just has no intention of playing nice with others no matter what. All you can really do is just take a deep breath, remember you’re the adult in the room, and move on…

expresso 3 points 5 months ago.

The cruelest form of torture for a troll is to ignore them. Don’t acknowledge them, don’t downvote, say nothing at all, deprive them of their amusement.

Kidding (2018)
Dante89 3 points 4 years ago.

With shows like Dexter and Californication. I am not surprised I love ‘Kidding’. And same as with those shows, they are on the darker side with the mood, life and what kind of humor they represent.

But I gotta say hands down it is a must see show ! Jim Carrey is amazing as the role of Jeff.

In the beginning you will ask yourself ‘’Huh? , no this will be too goofy’’. But nope that feeling quickly disappears with the great writing, story and Jim Carrey’s presence.

In short a very good show !

expresso 3 points 4 years ago.

Barry is another one, very similar to Kidding

Yeah, of course you got downvoted for saying something wholesome and nice that managed to offend no one.

Irresistible (2020)
expresso 3 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This is a very smart movie that is way better than the media says it is. If you are looking for a funny lines and jokes comedy this is not that kind of movie. It’s a satire about how ridiculous US election politics are, how the system got broken and stays broken. I’m not surprised the movie turns people off. It’s a mirror of the reality of what our media and politics are doing to us. It’s not a comedy, it’s a farce, about how our political system is a farce. The fact that this kind of politics irritates us and turns us off is exactly the way the system takes advantage of us to keep perpetuating itself. Love Chris Cooper in this!

The Lady and the Dale (2021)

Wowwwww…is this ever a story and a half. 5/5 I had always heard about Twentieth Century Motors and the three wheeled car was somewhere back in my kid memory. Interesting tie-in to the present at the end of the last installment…”it figures”

The Missing (2014)

Intense and suspenseful whodunit. The show Baptiste is a spinoff from Missing.

The Old Man (2022)
expresso 2 points 1 year ago*.

They are both doing fantastic work. If you’re middle aged or older, this is coming from a familiar place, which is a very different perspective than typical thrillers. Age is essentially a main character in the show. It makes sense that’s uninteresting / a turnoff for different audiences.

Earth (2023) S1 E3
expresso 2 points 9 months ago*.

Keeps getting better with every episode - this has the recent science about the geology of Earth being impacted by the development of plants. If you are a science nerd this is a must see show. +++++

Waiting for the Barbarians (2020)
expresso 2 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This has the feel of a 1940’s studio flick that would have been made with Peter Lorre et al. I love Mark Rylance, he did amazing character work here, I thought Jonny Depp’s character was creepily very effective. Cinematography very good (but not as David Lean as they are trying for). It’s definitely a film, not a movie, and the character work is masterful. I’m on board for any minimalist atmospheric art house film with deeper meaning, this was a bit too minimal. It moved me, but it didn’t move me enough. Ultimately I think this was Rylance’s character being too delicate. The end of a film should be like the lid of a box clicking shut. No click for me and not even sure there was a lid on this one.

If you look immediately above under “Post a comment” you will see a line of text saying “Link requests should be done in the forum.” Follow the link to the forum topic, look at the requirements, and add your ask to the last page of that topic. You need to copy the URL from the top of your browser page and put it in a post there.

I have looked around myself and have not been able to find any links. The complete show is on the original site and can be streamed there from a region-permitted VPN, but the show is in Swedish and there are no subtitles for any of the episodes and no way to add them while you are viewing. Someone will need to add mixdrop etc. links for the episodes and then if there are subtitles they can be played with the video.

The Last King (2016)

Where else are you gonna watch medieval combat on cross-country skis and ponies? Historically highly accurate portrayal of one chapter in the Norwegian Civil Wars, makes for a fascinating watch. No snappy dialogue here but a couple of familiar GoT faces in the cast. 4/5

Angelyne (2022)
augusts1 1 points 1 year ago.

She was never a fauxlebrity. She is a pioneer of doing what the Kardashians have done just on a smaller scale. She didn’t get anywhere close to being as famous or wealthy as they did since there was no social media back then. But she did use billboards to great effect to get her name out there.

Going to check this out since I love Emmy (which is what she goes by) & Angelyne. Thanks for commenting to bring it up in the current featured comments.

expresso 2 points 1 year ago.

I agree - I think of her as a hacker working around the system. What she created is basically an early analog version of social media (that’s an extremely heavy lift if you’re not a tech or media company). She ran against Gavin Newsom in the recall election!

Finding Noah (2015)
expresso 2 points 3 years ago*.

I grew up reading Thor Heyerdahl books because my aunt thought it was cool that when I was ten I read an article in the National Geographic and became obsessed with the Nazca lines. I devoured those books even though I knew they were probably mostly kind of maybe silly. No atheists were harmed in the making of this show. God and Jesus have a sense of humor. Everything is connected. Shakespeare was a plagiarist who had a real knack for telling other people’s stories with way better words. Nobody owns mythos, that’s the point. Nobody’s an expert. Go relax, smoke a joint or take a hard run or whatever your thing is, and enjoy this as a delightful soupcon of someone saying, hey what about that thing. (Extra points for all the Latinesque banter, amazing the people on this site and their zealful earnestness.) I’m just jealous nobody funds me to go on these kinds of junkets.

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S22 E7
YgraineDance 2 points 1 month ago.

So true. He’s petty about it, too. Gets cross if a guest is more loudly cheered for a salient remark or joke than he himself is.

expresso 2 points 1 month ago.

And yet, I watch him, because it’s still the only place anyone is getting people of different political and intellectual views together in the same hour interacting with each other on the same topics. I think going from 3 to 2 panel guests has made a difference. When there were 3 he wasn’t dominating the conversation, the guests were. I’m also noticing that the opening interviews are getting more fluffy. The percentage of interviewing celebs he admires rather than politicians and thinkers has gone way up.

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S22 E7
YgraineDance 3 points 1 month ago.

I’m not able to tolerate Maher anymore, but I watched this episode for my man Max Brooks. He’s always a can’t-miss for me; so smart and funny. Nothing fazes him. That is so appealing.

expresso 2 points 1 month ago.

He says he hasn’t changed. He’s changed. He’s nastier. I mean, he was always a jerk, but he was also at least hypothetically open minded. Now he’s got his pet issues and he’s about hammering on those with every set of guests.

Star Trek Continues (2013)
random000 2 points 10 months ago.

Besides Chris Pine, our favorite non-Shatner interpretation of Kirk is Vic Mignogna. Our kids especially like him. Mostly an anime voice actor, this short-lived fan series is a genuine love letter to the original staff who put Trek together. They consulted them rigorously on everything from lightning to types of fabric that was used, and that rigor shows since it really does look as if it were filmed in 1966.

Has the late Grant Imahara from Mythbusters as Sulu, Jimmy Dohan’s son Chris as Scotty, and a whole lot of really great guests from Star Trek itself and other actors such as Lou Ferrigno. It’s a good series that attempts to finish the original 5 year mission. It was shut down due to legalities, so the mission went unfinished after a season. What’s done is top-notch all the way.

expresso 2 points 10 months ago.

What really stood out for me the couple times I’ve watched this is: their voices are so high. I know, stupid, right?

Going back for a rewatch. The cinematography by Ole Bratt Birkelund is stunning. Every single item, piece of clothing, furniture, every single piece of color and scenery and the geometry on the screen is meticulously planned.

Doing another rewatch of this. Quantum levels above most shows in the last decade and eerily topical once again.

Ha! Agreed!
I like Timothy Olyphant as an actor and really liked him in the FX series “Justified” as well as the film (remake of) “The Crazies” too. Watching him in “The Mandalorian” episode? I STILL kind of thought of him as Raylan Givens but on Tattooine.

expresso 2 points 3 years ago*.

That’s because he was Raylan Givens on Tattooine :) Timothy Olyphant for all your lawman Hollywood needs. Deadwood, Justified, Fargo 2020, and now Mando. I haven’t seen Santa Clara Diet - should I?
