Cannes Confidential (2023)
DownrightDebonaire 2 points 10 months ago*.

I was very much looking forward to this show and gave it three episodes, hoping it would fall into it’s own formula. Unfortunately, it never really feels authentic. It feels like someone said hey let’s make a destination show and hired the crew from CSI Miami to film it. The pilot is way too over dramatic and the timing/beats are all off. It stinks of western/Hollywood influence. From the extremely stylized (unnecessary) angled shots from the ground to show the exotic backgrounds to the cheesy one liners with sunglasses.

I was hoping to watch a show where I learned about the location and culture over the course of a season. Instead it’s this trope filled disaster with a mysterious back story about the father that just isn’t attention grabbing. Macdonald & Dobbs, Wong & Winchester, The Spencer Sisters, and DeadLoche are all executed much better, have more than just a single female lead and if you’re not from those countries you learn a bit about their culture and the laws there- they also have plenty of humor and the dialogue is easier to understand because the actors aren’t stumbling their way through rapid fire English dialogue as their 2nd or 3rd language.

It seems like it was made for American audiences but they pumped it full of the formulaic stuff we’re sick of. If you like the first season of Lucifer and the 1st season of CSI Miami look no further than this sloppy mashup

I’m really surprised there’s only one link for this movie. Does anyone know where I can watch it in Comanche? I was told the Comanche version with english subtitles is the best way to watch it. People who complained about the dialogue being bad — it’s because they wrote it in Comanche then translated it.

Black Adam (2022)
DownrightDebonaire 1 points 10 months ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

I waited to watch this because it had so much negative press. I am glad I did. I see why the Rock fought for it and where it is seriously slacking.

  1. There should have been 10xs more support from the other DC stars for this film to tie it into the universe. there was none so I didn’t know where it fit in the multiverse AT ALL.
1a. Maybe the fight sequence where the DC posters get destroyed is foreshadowing a future film - but maybe those actors took them as personal shots against them by the team working on Black Adam?
  2. This could have drawn in the Ms Marvel crowd (teens plus Middle Eastern diaspora focus) and the Black Panther Crowd (Black diaspora + Anti-hero who is fighting for the diaspora & points out the colonizers rules don’t always apply to the people they oppressed - “not your kid not your country”) all to one DC blockbuster BUT THEY SERIOUSLY DROPPED THE BALL ON MARKETTING THAT.
  3. Watching this I thought…What is the Rock complaining about? There aren’t a lot of places that need more money — then I got to the zombie creatures. these ridiculous zombie things that look like the original Jason and the Argonauts! Awful. If that is any indication of what the film looked like before he stepped in and demanded more money that kudos to him for fighting for the film because it would have been complete trash.
  4. Last but not lease the music. This had blah boring music sequences. They really should have gotten a better music supervisor. I don’t need the slapstick retro songs and comedic points like Marvel. But a good recognizable song that lets you know badass ish is about to go down like in WonderWoman was seriously neglected here. The blah music really sets the pace of the film. Ms. Marvel and Black Panther did great jobs of using music appropriate for the location and incorporating modern music from those cultural groups - listen to the Ms. Marvel soundtrack it’s fantastic.

I hope they don’t scrap the entire Black Adam story. He could really tie into the Justice league and bridge the gap with Hawk and the Justice Society into that world.

To put it plainly, I would rather rewatch this than Shazam or Ant Man and look how much support those movies get. The Rock was right.

I binged the latest season and I can’t help but notice that often in the “previous episode” there’s a clip from a scene that I didn’t see. I wonder if they use clips that were cut from the final edit?

agreed upon Grimes “characteristics” as leader :) but that was also due to the script-writing.
whats forgotten by you(or my misjudgment of the USA),is the fact, that the gas-making was only possible due to a leaking natural oil-well. This obviously isnt found everywhere in the USA…same goes for “leftover”-stores of gunpowder still dry after 8? years of total chaos everywhere.
what i originally found interesting about Romeros (leftish) idea behind all his movies, that society always falls into incompetent hands in crisis.
doesnt have to be true, but it needs level/cool/strong heads and will to overcome the original turmoil and chaos.
definitly NOT a democracy then

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 10 months ago.

you can make black powder and you can make fuel plus the US has oil all over. from PA down to TX and all the way out to Alaska. It’s been more than 8 years. either way we could talk in circles about this. They would have fuel. they would have bullets and explosives.

This show is ambitious. I enjoyed that it was a new concept and didn’t just rip off Minority Report’s TV version I wasn’t expecting that much wrap-up in one episode. it felt a little rushed. I expected them to do something about the Politian’s who were excluded from the system. I also feel like I missed when Poet lost her eye. I was waiting on that — so it must not have been a great scene if I do not remember it.

i didnt “forget” that, but when they were “producing” gasoline,it was a rawest product imaginable, remember? and it was in very rare supply too.
same with the “bullets”,refilled cartridges with leftover gunpowder-stocks.
anyhow,i find that funny, but agree, that theoretical some communities might have the resources for that.

yes if this rag tag desperate group could do all that, think about the rest of the country. we only see an isolated tiny universe. The common wealth and all those other giant colonies are manufacturing on a better scale. I like that we are getting a glimpse of people handling their ish better. Personally I hated Grimes and thought nearly ever disaster he was at fault in someway. He was a terrible leader. SO I like the idea of other more successful groups popping in every once in a while but it never happened.

if the comment doesnt suite the person editing, its gone faster than the wind here arround…
so,once again, why can they drive arround in cars, when in season 7 all gasoline turned bad and they were forced to haul out of museums old horse carts?
does it makes sense to you?
hope, this whitewashed NEGAN character gets his balls back and dumps this ever-hating woman

DownrightDebonaire 2 points 10 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

You forget they started manufacturing gasoline years ago. They also make alcohol, bullets etc. They (people from villages of Alexandria, Hilltop, Kingdom & Oceanside) went and got horse and buggies (plus seeds and other agriculture tools) because they as a colony were desperate. But outside of that colony (and in spin-offs) people have varying degrees of re-establishing manufacturing on a micro level. There are colonies out there with electricity so they can weld and produce more.

Gotham knights is so bad. I feel sorry for Misha who is carrying the show. I gave it a chance but multiple times I found myself getting up to do chores rather than waste my time paying attention. On one hand, it’s about time, but the show did have a pretty good run. One the other hand, was a kind of crappy way to do it, really left it kind of a cliff hanger, and left you wanting more, would really have liked another season, with them tracking Hetty…but it is what it is, and I have seen far worse endings for shows that didn’t last this long.

East New York (2022)
Alien 1 points 11 months ago*.

I like it a lot. To me, it has an “NYPD Blue” vibe, which Jimmy Smits also starred in back in 1994 - 2004.

DownrightDebonaire 1 points 11 months ago.

Seriously Jimmy Smits gets no respect. I do not think he has had a single show go past the first season since NYPDBlue/WestWing days. His last law show was really good and they didn’t give it a chance.

On another note as far as the reat of the show goes, I am not impressed with the Rookie’s storyline. Maybe they didn’t want to go hard on them since there are two Rookie shows already out, but the real meat of the show is Regina Howard. Her slow drawls and the way she looks at people is the most accurate portrayal of a woman in NYC working as first responder. Every time there’s nonsense on the show she looks at them like “are you kidding me” It’s so authentic to this part of Brooklyn. When I had to remove someone from my building, the two officers who showed up were exactly like Hayward and - I can’t recall his name (the bald older training officer).

Compared to the other catchphrases of captains past it’s not that bad….but that shit-eating-grin on her face put the nail in the coffin. I couldn’t take it seriously. Star Trek Prodigy started off better than Discovery. And I am a fan of Prodigy so far. lol.

You mean Star Wars Prodigy? ;). I swear it’s a Star Wars show that got a few tweaks to sell it to Star Trek.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E13
hellsingfan01 8 points 2 years ago.

My god you new Star Trek fans are just as bad as the Disney era Star Wars fans the only thing that would make the classic era fans happy is if they were given actually good products to watch and not something that’s going to be dated in five minuets and something that looks like it was both written filmed in five minuets Star Trek is literally a universal franchise and that’s something the latest crop of Star Trek writers fail to even understand.

DownrightDebonaire 2 points 2 years ago.

it’s weird. A lot of the people claiming to be ST fans are complaining about things that are 100% ST. I’m a fan — how can I not watch it? I dont have to like every single character because there are plenty to go around. That’s always been Star Trek. . To this day I want to beat Riker over the head with his dumb trombone. I roll my eyes everytime I see Frankes is directing an episode. But really I think it’s the actor I do not like, not the storylines he has. I can still appreciate all of DS9 and hate him.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E13
Jedi-Knight_45 3 points 2 years ago.

So I gotta say, after watching this season …. it really felt like absolutely nothing of substance actually happened and I thought,

“In a parallel universe, we would be talking about ‘Star Trek: Brave New Worlds’ Season 4 Episode 13 right now and Discovery WOULD NOT have had to exist.”

and that just made me sad all over … why couldn’t we have had BNW instead of this trash????

DownrightDebonaire 0 points 2 years ago.

I’m excited by BNW but it really sounds like Enterprise 2 Cosmic Bugaloo.

This combative comment of course comes from someone who thinks Enterprise is the most underrated of all the shows.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017) S4 E13
moongoddess 6 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

I assume it is a nod to Nog from DS9. After all, he was the first SFC from his species. I can only assume he made a grand impact on his generations Star Trek Adventures. Would have been great if a spin off from DS9 centered around Nog and his progression within the Star Fleet Academy and beyond.

I have watched the ‘star trek fanflix’ and enjoyed them as well. It does show promise within the Trekverse that Roddenberry is still influencing future directors, producers, video creators, actors, and, Trekkies. Though, I did have a few moments of ‘WTH’ because of the content and plot process lacking continuity of it’s own progression. But, that’s how strong popular directors and producers of movies begin. By learning how to adjust things where they were so misguided in the first place. Kudo’s to the fanflick creators and future hollywood notables.

In my humble opinion, if a person has to be negative towards a specific program, without acknowledging the heartfelt opinions of others who enjoy such programming(…especially on the chat boards), they are not true Trekkies. Nor they do not comprehend the idea of creative adaptations from the original content presented decades before it. Those commenting with negative opinion but include acceptance towards those of us posting our enjoyment of the programs show more respect to the whole of entire Hollywood productions from their humble beginnings. Don’t forget, BEN HUR was created a dozen times and it’s humble root was a 10-15 minute silent skit.

There is no law that states all adaptations MUST adhere to the exact way the original production (Star Trek 1960s) were presented. If that were the case then all theater/stage plays, movies, and musicals would still be presented with MEN ONLY…and ONLY MEN. Remember Shakespeare? All his Folios during his lifetime were staged in all entertainment venues with Adult men as the male and female and child characters. Imagine today’s society not allowing women to be actresses, producers, directors, theater administration representatives.

If some of you think we true Trekkies are being ‘sarastic’…We Are Not. All our opinions come from a true Trekkie heart and from a place we can respect and accept creative adaptations for their gallant attempts at entertaining.

If some of you think a program is mawkish drivel or filled with politi-woke stuff…perhaps it is time you stop watching it after 4 seasons, heck, even 1 season, since it bothers your political opinions that much. Also, go back and rewatch TNG, DS9, STV from the 1990s-2000s. Pull up a history book of events and issues from the 1980s and 1990s and watch and read at same time. I guarantee you that those programs also had parallel dialog, and, plot sequences/Story Arc’s, within it that reflected the political problems of that 1990s time period, too. Maybe you were probably too young to realize/notice, or, not born yet.

If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Stop trolling, bullying, being negative, and, criticizing us who are devout Trekkies. Respect everyone’s opinion. I do my best to respect the opinions of those who don’t enjoy programs. It’s not for them. But they could be kinder in their comments towards others instead of being katty and troublemaking, towards them about the fact they were emotionally affected in a good, or, sad, or happy, or bad, way with a specific episode. Seems that the art of productive Pro/Con Debate Class education has all been forgotten.

Live Long and Prosper.

By the way, a bit of Star Trek Trivia. Leonard Nemoy’s Jewish Roots inspired the Vulcan Salute. Shalom/Peace.

The comments were still on my mind as well. I was thinking about it and signed in to say something and look what you did! I could not have said it better (or as diplomatically).

I would like to add that I’m really tired of people saying the show is nt Star Trek because it’s overly emotional and has an agenda that TOS or DS9 eras didn’t have. Are we talking about the same TOS that broke color and gender barriers with a Black woman on the bridge? The same show that had Dresses as BTUs for both genders? The same shows that has introduced every form of government we have on Earth for people to get a better understanding - in the form of alien species? Since TOS we’ve had transgender, non-binary, intersexed, two-spirit, pansexual and poly species. Everything LGBTQ+ but now it’s an agenda? Why aren’t people so upset that the last Trill character had a symbiod of another gender? So many things are being repeated episode after episode that have already been done before. If you do not like a story line, ok I can understand. Burnum kinda irks me now too. But please stop saying this isn’t Star Trek. It’s all about the IDIC

The ultimate (to me) person to play him would have been Jason Statham —for the movies. Reacher is older and retired for a while when the first book dropped. He’s also closest to the physical description of Reacher (this new guy is great but vanity muscles - come on.
Reacher shovels dirt to get his) He’s broken his nose several times and has a pronounced brow which is why they call him a gorilla all the time. This guy is a pretty boy. A pretty boy who kicks ass though! https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005458/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

Tonight’s episode was hard to focus on because I was so distracted by the characters. I thought the lead guest star playing Judge Park was Vanessa Lachey; She is the star of NCIS Hawai’i. When the show started I was so confused. The new lead had been on NCIS LA just One season prior. A recurring character! Her new role is confusing when they do flashbacks (last episode) implying when she met Gibbs — incorporating NCIS— that didn’t line up… So I looked her u and tonight’s episode of Magnum (only up for about 20 min) does not show that she was on the show…

Well it turns out it was Moon Bloodgood on tonight’s episode of Magnum playing Judge Park, and she was also the one on NCIS LA in 2021.
