She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) S1 E2
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Maslany makes this work; her comedic timing and snarky sarcasm are excellent. Her brother stars in “Murdoch Mysteries” and he proves that talent runs in the family.

It was a nifty casting decision getting Tim Roth back for his role here. He was unforgettable as Blonsky back in the day and I know he’ll bring it now. Very neat show; just wish it was an hour long.

The Witch: Part 2 - The Other One (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

This had subs that were so garbled as to make nonsense of many, if not most, key scenes. This had the effect of taking the viewer right out of the story, unfortunately. Oddly, the subs seemed to get worse as the movie went on, for some reason. I haven’t seen a film this badly subbed in quite awhile, so I’m not sure what happened. There was the usual fun super-fighting action we saw in the first installment, and the super-healing as well. Be sure to stay for the after-credit scene, which we’re prompted for by the subtitles with “Don’t be silly - there’s colored eggs at the end!”

Carter (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

I had to go back at times to listen to details in order to follow the plot completely, but there was lots and lots and LOTS of action non-stop. Be sure to look for this movie spoken in English, as it’s important to hear reports and conversations dealing with the crisis at hand.
It must have been exhausting to do this film LOL and my hat’s off to the stunt people and actors. The real star here was the camerawork - amazing angles and shots, lots of CGI edge-of-your-seat fun.

Kill Command (2016)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

This turned out to be a fun time-waster that was a bit better than I went in thinking it would be. The premise was good, especially the augmented-human concept, but things began to drag a little during the middle and I found myself replaying some bits due to garbled dialogue and/or lapses in logic or abrupt editing. The music was good and helped maintain moodiness throughout. The movie ended in a way that I hadn’t quite “mentally written the script” lol and was kind of a teaser. A couple of the actors I knew from other things, so that was a plus.

Automation (2019)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

I had a bit of fun here! Anyone remember a movie called “Chopping Mall”? This pic took darkly satirical elements of Robocop and combined them with the snarky sci-fi gorefest that was Chopping Mall. The result is a smallish-budget “beaten-dog-never-forgets” story that you want to see to the end. It has all kinds of feels along the way. ‘Auto’ is quite a character, and the suit is well done. I liked this!

The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

The movie was filmed in an actual Italian castle, masquerading as Spain in 1492. Everyone looks believably grimy and the settings are dim at times, as would be expected in a dungeon or cell. The costumes look good as well, and the score is pretty atmospheric (from one of the Band brothers, who do those Puppet Master movies and were involved in this one as well).
There are several actors I like here, chiefly Lance Henriksen as Inquisition torturer Tomas de Torquemada, and he manages to steal every scene he’s in. Just the right amount of insanity, lust, and sadism all wrapped up in a nice religious bow. You do NOT want his blessing! An article I read on this film said he stayed in character at all times on set and scared the shyte out of cast and crew LOL.
Every now and then the dialogue slips (deliberately) into casual modern patter, which brings a smile. Not for small kids, of course - a little nudity and of course, Spanish Inquisition’s violence.

The Gray Man (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

This is a fun actioner, kind of John Wick-y, James Bond-y, and Jason Bourne-y in a lot of ways. The plot is simple but this doesn’t detract; we’re taken to locations all over Europe, getting into fast-paced road drama and tons of gunplay. Several big-name actors’ presence drew me in, and I’m happy to say I enjoyed it.

Death Hunt (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Another “most dangerous game” type film, not great but not the worst out there. Things got better toward the middle and finished pretty well. The sound-mixing wasn’t quite right and I kept missing bits of dialogue along the way.

Corrective Measures (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Overall, a subpar effort all around, though I understand Willis is doing his best with the challenges he’s facing. God bless him. I guess Michael Rooker had some fun; he looked like he was, anyway. Wasn’t sure about anyone else. I did sort of like the little twist.

The Haunting of the Tower of London (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Every history buff has a theory on how and why the Princes met their end. This movie plays with that and adds a supernatural bent.

Someone in this production clearly had a sentimental fondness for 60s-70s Hammer films and stylish Bava horror, and ran with it here. Kind of fun, that was. The title cards, the settings, the mood all brought me back to those days of florid (but fun) scenery-chewing actors and villains. Thy got the lighting right for the 1480s, with dim candles doing the heavy lifting while subtly using modern tech so the audience could actually see. The dungeon felt cold and dirty; with some unpleasant punishment scenes included. All in all, it wasn’t terrible; the effort was there. Adults may enjoy…but know that young ones don’t need to see some nightmare-inducing things.
A.K.A. “The Haunting of the Tower of London”

#Dupe# (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

The plot here is simple and has been done in several movies in the past, but it gets going and holds one’s interest pretty well. One thing I have to say I liked is, this movie, unlike dozens made these days, does not rely on/overuse the damn cellphones. You don’t spend the entire movie reading text messages! The phone is there as the tool it should be if needed, NOT as a star of the whole movie in its own right. I miss movies where phones weren’t saviors, deus ex machinas, or plot-advancers.

Butler brings a realistic, if somewhat dumb, character to life. The wife was vapid, and her parents were caricatures, sadly. I had my own idea what the actual hook of the tale was going to be, but it wasn’t quite what I envisioned. Decent, though, IMO, so give it a go.

Black Site (2018)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Nothing much to see here. Very low budget, and the story is muddled. It feels as if the backstory about the Elder Gods and their doings, which was only touched on, would have been dynamite - but instead, the movie keeps plodding along and focusing on the unpleasant, emotionally damaged heroine, and her hang-ups. There’s a lot of talk, with some fights sprinkled in.
If there was a message in all this, I missed it.

Dark Winds (2022)

I almost whizzed right past this series, until I saw the cast list and the behind-the-camera names. The literature comes to life. Excellent first eps. and I’m looking forward to more.

The Boys (2019) S3 E2

An excellent series. Amazing story plus a cast that really sells it. A lot of talent has delivered the goods here.

We Own This City (2022) S1 E6
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Stunning! Top-notch from start to finish. Acting, dialogue, character development, settings - the series has it all. Every actor brought their A-game, but Bernthal stole the show IMO. Things conclude on just the right incredulous note. If you’re in the mood for a good crime show that’s realistic (scarily so!) I can recommend this one. 10/10

perhaps Marvin set it up to keep Red looking else where. He said he watched the tapes so it was after Mr. Kaplan got them. Also I don’t think he approved of the way Red handled her at the end so it could be a way get even for her.

Yep, maybe so.

The Blacklist (2013) S9 E20

When you think about it, it does make sense. You’d have to remember Marvin in the earlier seasons.

YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

You’re right. Red has become a little too unfocused as he has obsessed, raged, and grieved. Turning on people; missing the actual snakes in the nest. And what’s up with the Mr. Kaplan angle, I wonder?

The Blacklist (2013) S9 E20

Slam-bang episode. We’re in a fine kettle of fish now.😲

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S20 E15
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

That professional “hoot & holler on command” audience he has had since Covid era is maddening. They go at it as loudly as possible at everything Maher says (even when laughter isn’t the appropriate response right then) and are so fake sounding that it’s a real distraction.
Maher’s unspoken attitude is sort of like, “Yeah, this is frankly overdone but I loooove the adoration.”

Bosch: Legacy (2022)
YgraineDance 5 points 2 years ago.

I am VERY glad to see this series continue! The new dynamic is just as absorbing as before; with a great new couple of characters (although I do miss “Crate & Barrel” lol). Bosch has an excellent informal partnership with Honey Chandler, and I’m really glad the writers realized that giving her a meatier part in his world adds so much dimension to the cases he goes after.

Outer Range (2022) S1 E8
YgraineDance 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Truly nonsensical, with kooky threads going every which way. Maddeningly so, since there was an excellent sci-fi opportunity here! The show started with promise, then veered off into “mystical” drama. I am so disappointed; this was a real letdown. How drunk/high were these writers???

Star Trek: Picard (2020) S2 E10
YgraineDance 3 points 2 years ago.

Very, very well-done finale. That’s how you do it!

The Endgame (2022) S1 E10
YgraineDance 3 points 2 years ago.

When this series began, the show felt more akin to “The Blacklist” (and a few of us mentioned this at the beginning) - but as time has gone on, it appears it has more of an air of “Blindspot”, with all of its extrapolation of obscure leads, conclusions, and facts.
Not saying I don’t enjoy the show, because I do! Baccarin nails it! It’s just that things have fallen into a pattern of every-step-depends-on-correct-interpretation-of-wild-guesstimate.
Can they sustain a show based on this routine? Time will tell.

It’s a weird mash-up of elements of Twin Peaks, Under the Dome, NeXt, La Brea, and several other things that intrigued at first and then went off the tangent. It has time to improve, I guess…

It’s just a shame that a show can’t work more with the great sci-fi material it offers, and less with the human-stupidity aspect. But there it is. 🙁

p.s. …and can’t forget “The Whispers” and “Emergence.”

Come Play (2020)
YgraineDance 1 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Not bad for an almost-Babadook 2.0. The theme, though presented differently in this film, of a special-needs child and the parent(s) who must soldier on and cope in some unexpected way, is timeless. In The Babadook, the at-her-wit’s-end mom learned to manage things and coexist with the creature, while the mom here simply stepped up and traded her life in order to spare her son’s—-her son who was at long last attempting to speak and to convey his interest in having friends.

I’m not a fan of jump scares; they tend to take me out of the moment…but the ones here were handled fairly effectively. The kid actors were excellent; I especially loved Byron, the little salty friend of the main kid. The not-so-subtle message about our modern addiction to our tech devices is one to heed. I recommend this movie for teens and up; it’ll creep out those that are younger, so be aware.

Me too. You know, the original Grantchester vicar (Sidney) met and fell in love with a visiting American woman and moved there to be with her. Will stepped right in and the saga continued—-so maybe that’ll happen again. I hope so.

Moonfall (2022)
YgraineDance 3 points 2 years ago.

Well, my headphones sure loved it. Lots of jaw-dropping effects and glorious sound adding spice to a formulaic-but-fun pseudo-science fantasy blockbuster. “Samwell Tarly” from GoT was wonderful in his role here; Berry and Wilson less so, but alright.
Speaking of GoT, I liked how (intentionally or not) the ‘megastructure’ in the story reminded me a lot of Thrones’s opening credits in a way. The rings, movement, etc. Overall a good disaster flick IMO; a sort of combo of The Abyss + The Day After Tomorrow + Independence Day. Fun to watch here at home and likely even better in a theatre.

Law & Order (1990) S21 E6

For too long, wealthy and/or entitled in this country have thought money and status would allow them anything.

The day isn’t here yet, but the handwriting is on the wall - the marginalized, the bottom-rungers, the reviled, the devalued, the dissed, the mocked, and the hated will come into their own.
That is inevitable. All the signs surround us. “The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on…”

I liked the show … until now. Anytime I see Dylan McDermott I picture him as the masturbating, crying psychiatrist Ben Harmon from AHS. Even if he didn’t play that role, I don’t like him as the new boss.

Oh, I like the new character! He seems so real in his way of handling his temper; he feels, and communicates aloud, things the way you’d see someone do in real life. I love the way he tells off those that require it LOL

Mayans M.C. (2018) S3 E8

The story is interesting and involving as always, and boy is it filled with layers of symbolism and meaning in its complex plot.

Okay, they’ve established that the prisoner reads lips, so why then must the director turn to face her as he discusses his plans with the team(s)? He even sometimes leaves the room mic open so she can hear every word.
And it has also been established that she is somehow communicating clandestinely with others outside—and no one has stopped that. So why IS this??? I scratch my head every episode…

Lucifer (2016) S5 E12

Dreadful. I never knew Dan was this obtuse. Not sure why they took the character and mauled it this way. In this series, Dan was always more appealing and relatable to me than Lucifer ever was…but this episode cured me of that😑
