She Was So Pretty (2016)

total mess. possibly slowest, least interesting attempt at horror movie i’ve ever almost watched most of kinda between fast-forward & dozing off ever. only creepy thing about it is that it actually does sorta make you want to kill yourself. fer real…

Ghost Cat (2004)

the super-hard-up portion of elliott’s career?

The Deep House (2021)
=CountZer0= 0 points 2 years ago.

a not very scary haunted house movie, but being a drowned house is a unique take on the formula… shot entirely underwater makes for some def creepy scenes & is a worthwhile view just to see how they pulled it off. what a nightmare this must have been to shoot! too bad they didn’t use the wonderful sets to better effect. a better script & this could have been terrifying! too bad, coulda been a classic….

Battle of the Planets (1978)
=CountZer0= 2 points 2 years ago.

whoa-m-g! used to love this show, never really realized that this was one of the 1st anime i ever saw… loved those little ball-bearing bombs they would fling handfuls of @ the badguyz. and when they would slam that throttle forward to engage the burning phoenix & the sound it would make when it turbozoomed off, kinda “slsssh-TING”! wonderful, thx much for reminding of this… wow.
Update- oh no! i haven’t watched any of it yet, but the theme song just bubbled up from the depths of adolescent subconscious archives, but it is WAY stuck to my fore-brain! LOL!

Hellraiser (1987)
=CountZer0= 2 points 2 years ago*.

it’s easy to forget just how influential this film was at the time, especially the theme of sexuality as a major narrative point intrinsic to the development of the plot. instead of an excuse to unnecessarily and (usually) clumsily shoehorn a bit of cheap t&a into the proceedings, this film uses it as a major motivation for some of the main characters. even more noteworthy is the introduction of the concept of pain as pleasure, something desirable to be sought after that also serves as motive for some of the characters to drive the story. as an added bonus, it also lends itself to some of the best lines in a movie that is already teeming with memorable quotes.
at the end of the day a great horror movie that is still deservedly holding it’s spot right near the top of the list of the greatest horror films of all time…
PostScriptum: new news! not only is hulu doing a new movie described as “a small re-imagining” of the original novella & the 1st film, but HBO is working on a series that is scheduled to debut in 2022. fingers crossed, hopefully at least one of them will work out & bring some much-needed cenobitey goodness back into the fold….

this is a sion sono film, until this comes out i’d recommend Tokyo Tribes (aka tribes of Tokyo) to get a feel for his stuff, see if it’s you-compatible…

The Green Knight (2021)
EchotaChick 4 points 2 years ago.

Welllll, I like it! I WILL LOVE it. I appreciate being able to watch now; it’s just too dark. But I’m looking forward to a DVD version! This film is an artful & modern interpretation of the classic tale of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight which can be (sorta) considered a spin off of Le Morte d’Arthur/Camelot/Excalibur. If anyone has trouble understanding the movie (especially because the filmmaker takes a lot of poetic license), I can give you a link to an excellent article that is both a quick explanation of the film -and if you want to know more - a mini refresher course about legends of knights, chivalry, Christianity, magic, the Dark & Middle Ages & how it’s all entangled. It makes everything perfectly clear. More of y’all will then like, maybe even love, the movie! ;) P.S. Don’t be afraid to say it’s nonsensical b/c it IS without the background knowledge. Who remembers all of Senior year English Lit?! =) Cheerio!

=CountZer0= 2 points 2 years ago.

please, if you wouldn’t mind i’d love to have that link. so many permutations & versions of the old myths & tales from ancient to the Mists of Avalon, and everything in-between. thx much

Free Guy (2021)
=CountZer0= 2 points 2 years ago*.

No spoilers, movie takes care of that all on it’s own. soooooo bad… ryan has never been discerning about the roles he takes, but this is an extreme low. formulaic, overly (falsely) sentimental…. so rarely is the term “pablum” the absolute perfect fit. seems like he needs a real friend to tell him that sometimes, it’s just not worth it…

prefer aja’s horror movies… this was okaaaaay, but that kid just needed to die. badly. not as in quickly, as in horrifically.

Yup, finally watched it (sort of). Had the sound off and kind of skimmed it, but I agree with everything you wrote. My personal belief is that Grover was trying to be the next Jan Michael Vincent (sorry, was watching Rick & Morty reruns again, and suggesting he wanted to be the next Vin Diesel or Jason Statham would have made my brain bleed like Dennis Hopper’s in this movie ;)) - or he had a crush on Dina Meyer and just wanted a scene where he got to kiss her.

Really, though, the ending made no sense with the sound off. If the story had kept going with the “maggot in the brain” mind-controly thing like “ST2: Wrath of Khan” I could go with it. But Meyer is a better actress than this movie suggests - Grover must have directed her to “jump higher! Be more scared!” that kind of thing. I’ve never seen anyone overreact like she did, even her in other movies. And I don’t know exactly how his character came back to life after being fried in Ol Sparky, but watching him go Bill Cosby on her at the end and then her shooting him but reluctantly was straight up silly. And if you go by the “closure slide” text at the end, the “unspeakable horror” was either having an abortion or giving an innocent man the chair. A minor scandal like knocking up your mistress many years ago wouldn’t even show up on the public’s radar these days. Frankly, I’m not sure shooting immigrants would make much of a blip if you’re in certain states. That should be the unspeakable horror…love how just presenting a little “evidence” to the press completely cleared the other guy’s name, too. All I can say is things sure have changed since 2004. ;)

10 bonus points for working in a jan michael vincent reference!

Leverage (2008) S5 E15
=CountZer0= 1 points 2 years ago.
A fitting & satisfying conclusion to the story; it sends the team off to continue fighting the good fight with a sense of hope & a worthy goal to work toward. Excellent job in keeping with the tone that has run throughout the series. Add in a bit of an organizational shuffle that will allow the characters to grow and develop, and they're sure remain interesting. This is especially important now that the story has been continued, i'm excited to see what has become our little friends & what they've been getting up to...
This might not be a truly "All-Time Greatest Ground-Breaking Influential & Important" show, but what it is may be just as important & valuable; It is genuinely entertaining; featuring solid, decently intelligent writing of plot, character & dialogue (and having all 3 is as rare as it is important), a talented, dependable cast with wonderful group chemistry who are readily likeable, played skillfully enough that we quickly come to care about & become invested in them. The stories are taken from the real world & current events and address the kinds of problems and situations that we see every day and are all too common, and this group tackles these issues in ways that we all wish we could. It may not be very realistic, but who among us doesn't long for the opportunity to stand up to injustice and exploitation to try to make the world a better place? It may be make-believe or just form of wish-fulfillment, but by showing that sometimes goood people can make a difference and that things can sometimes get better, if a tv show can give you a little bit of a warm-and-fuzzy and perhaps inspire you to give your fellow human a helping hand instead of a middle finger, then yeh, i think this show is worth it...
Boys from County Hell (2021)
Ashtré 1 points 3 years ago.

A good film with a bit of historical truth in it—good IF you like vampire movies, that is. I like that it highlighted all the speculation and controversy surrounding Stoker’s famous novel in the midst of all this Irish legend. A bit bummed the Pogues song that this film derives its name from isn’t part of the soundtrack, though.

=CountZer0= 1 points 2 years ago.

the world needs more pogues.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2007)
=CountZer0= 0 points 2 years ago.

the book blew me away, but this was so trite and dull… the book was twisted & the parfumier a wonderfully demented little psycho… worth reading if you enjoy hedonistic perversity (in a good way)

The Ice Road (2021)

Predictable? Yes but still a good movie that kept my attention throughout. Was that Flea at the end???

Hereditary (2018)
=CountZer0= 3 points 2 years ago.

one of maybe the three greatest horror films of the new millennium; felt almost stunned at the end… been a really long time since a movie was actually able to elicit an emotional response. shock, fear, uncertainty foreboding…. wow, so nice to feel… anything

The Incident (2017)
=CountZer0= 1 points 2 years ago.

can never have too many mindbenders, and this one is pretty good. nicely shot, music is great & decent pacing. end could be wrapped up a little tighter, but overall a solid addition to the “enigma wrapped in a riddle entangled in a quantum interlaced superposition” or whatever the kids call it nowadays…

Unspeakable (2002)
=CountZer0= 4 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

this one is purely a vanity project. whoever this pavan guy is, i guarantee he has a massive trust-fund or family money behind him. this is self produced. he wrote. he directed it. he “stars” in it. he bought it along with the biggest names he could wheedle/cajole/threaten/whatever to go along with it. and i bet it wasn’t cheap, I’d be very surprised if the actors didn’t cost more than the entire rest of the production. and finally, he got what he paid for (& produced, directed and starred, etc…) an absolute abomination of filmic delusion that he can nevertheless show people & prove he was actually in a movie with some real actors…. yay him! like self-publishing a book but 9 trillion times more expensive.

Pig (2021)

a beautiful film. nic’s best since mandy…

It Cuts Deep (2020)
=CountZer0= 2 points 2 years ago.

dull. low production values. adds nothing to the genre, or to anything really. stilted, wooden acting & terrible dialogue fits perfectly with the derivative plot. black comedy / horror? none of the above. just… ugh. what a waste of… umm, everything involved in this lifeless lump of embarrassment to all involved. the viewer included.

The Crow (1994)

first time theCure was used in a major motion picture soundtrack & it almost caused a scandal…. the world has changed.

yeh, sure, been done before, but this was done really well! just fun & very few outright suspension-of-disbelief breaking moments (the worst offense probably the credits scene, wouldn’t you at least, maybe, throw a blanket over the armory? but again it was just a throw-away gag so no big deal…) incredibly nice to see… just go along for the trip & enjoy the scenery. very solid & thoroughly entertaining. thx to primewire & u/l’r as always
