The Pit and the Pendulum (1991)
YgraineDance 4 points 1 year ago.

The movie was filmed in an actual Italian castle, masquerading as Spain in 1492. Everyone looks believably grimy and the settings are dim at times, as would be expected in a dungeon or cell. The costumes look good as well, and the score is pretty atmospheric (from one of the Band brothers, who do those Puppet Master movies and were involved in this one as well).
There are several actors I like here, chiefly Lance Henriksen as Inquisition torturer Tomas de Torquemada, and he manages to steal every scene he’s in. Just the right amount of insanity, lust, and sadism all wrapped up in a nice religious bow. You do NOT want his blessing! An article I read on this film said he stayed in character at all times on set and scared the shyte out of cast and crew LOL.
Every now and then the dialogue slips (deliberately) into casual modern patter, which brings a smile. Not for small kids, of course - a little nudity and of course, Spanish Inquisition’s violence.

The actress Rona De Ricci committed suicide July 2020 after she published her memoir in which she talked of suicide in her outstanding autobiography. Her IG account thehumanrevolution2020 last post was a suicide note. Her married name was Rona de Ricci Carafa, and her husband can be seen as the cause of the suicide for what he put her through. She can also be found in The Rage And Glory, and The Penitent.

Bingo. Like Big Bad Mama, many of these films had strong women that dealt harshly with abusive men.

random000 1 points 2 days ago.

Roger Corman! Big Bad Mama 1 & 2. 2 is unusual since it has Danielle Brisebois (who was the little girl Stephanie in Norman Lear’s All In The Family) and also Julie McCullough from that awful Growing Pains show). The vibe those girls have is total solidarity. It’s kind of like Manhandlers in a way, which is also exploitation with strong women.

grasshopper rex 1 points 2 days ago.

Soft core sexploitation films of the early 70s made it a glorious time to be a pre-teen boy with a drive-in in our neighborhood. The Lone Star, or Porn Star as it was known locally, also showed XXX films all the way up to 1987, a remarkable feat given that we were in the bible belt.

random000 1 points 2 days ago.

It seems so! Some of these exploitation films were directed by women, such as Doris Wishman, who would insert social commentary, not unlike with blaxploitation. For a girl, the guys were nice, but quite a few of these depicted ramped-up empowered women, which was even nicer. Other than all that jive, it was just kooky dress-up pretend which was fun.

Break out role for little Jackie Coogan who grew up to wed Betty Grable, then become Uncle Fester in the Addams Family, as well as Shirley Jones dad in The Partridge Family (after Ray Bolger who was The Scarecrow in The Wizard Of Oz.)

More importantly, Jackie’s parents stole all of his money & he had to take them to court to get his earnings back, leading to landmark legislation that would protect child actors from predatory parents (California Child Actor’s Bill- The Coogan Act). Throughout his life, Charlie Chaplin took care of Jackie & never turned his back on him.

Unusual in that this is one of the last Rita Hayworth films before it was known she had Alzheimer’s. The whole cast is the draw though. It’s Ed Begley sr. last role before he died, and besides Mimsy, also has Robert Walker jr., the son of Jennifer Jones. Most people know him from Easy Rider & as Charlie X from Star Trek. If you want to get really wacky, he also appeared in Time Tunnel & The Invaders.

“Race and money got people into politics” - talking about in the 70s how christian schools were no longer tax exempt if they continued segregation. interesting thesis, that christian nationalists, or conservative political activism, were the primary organisers of jan 6, not sure that i entirely agree, me placing political views above that but intertwined of course. i do think it is important to look at it from that prism, but in a wider context, which it tries but i believe has some of the zeal it is purporting against.. perhaps. i think if america were to become a fascist state that religiosity would be a part of its make up but not its overarching coherence, but instead it has kind of latched onto and shares the same values of intolerance, and the same history of course.. though when you look at the numbers and its up to 40% of the us as fundamentalist, hence roe. i think the pro-life movement is representative of an active contingent rallying Christianity in america, whereas gerrymandering is a more encompassing politically active right movement. And of course theres the package nexus of military, state, man, god, race, ability etc. interesting stat from this 15% from a poll were full christian nationalists. ooph and theres a media group called salem… on the nose…on the other hand, it was interesting to see christian conservative commentators interviewed in this documentary being critical despite their histories.. a bit like excult members that still believe in the spaghetti monster but were out of the organisation. bit of a ramble.. good doc though. i have requested links.

Farscape fans weren’t happy about the unresolved story when nbc killed the series, so they finally got to see their fav show end as nicely as possible when the 2 part Peacekeeper Wars was released & gave a proper end to the series. Hans Zarkov 2 points 4 days ago.

As long as she looks up once in a while… Helen of Troy may have had the face that launched 1000 triremes, but Amanda’s got the eyes that launched 1000 Prometheus-class starships. Which I only mentioned so I could say that “Sir, we can’t name the ship Enterprise” was quite possibly the best piece of SF dialogue ever put into a script (though Futurama’s got a couple really good ones too).

random000 2 points 4 days ago.

Bravo to that!

Andromeda (2000)
Hans Zarkov 2 points 4 days ago.

Oh, man, Lexx was a head trip until I could binge-watch the movies and first season. So much crazy stuff going on and so few real-life touchstones until (hmmm, I sense a trend here) NBC got ahold of it and gave it a $10 budget for the last season. Still, I agree completely that it was very underrated - sometimes I get the feeling German TV doesn’t always translate to US TV, but maybe Netflix’s push to bring shows like Dark to Netflix USA will make it easier. :)

random000 2 points 4 days ago.

That 1st season of The Lexx was done by Showtime, so it’s very different than the rest of the series. The entire series however is brilliant. Really dig Patricia Zentilli as the Prez wifey.

YES! Farscape is amazing! Did everyone catch “Sanctuary”?? Amanda Tapping was just as good in it, if not better, than she was in the SGU’s. https://www.primewire.tf/tv/2113-sanctuary

random000 4 points 4 days ago.

Sanctuary is waaay cool. It started as a web series, so it’s cool to catch that as well as the episodes made for Sci-Fi before nbc hijacked the network & killed off all the good shows - like SG-1, Farscape, Sanctuary, SG-A, etc.

Andromeda (2000)
Hans Zarkov 4 points 4 days ago.

I’d recommend Farscape, it shared a lot of the same elements as SG:A in terms of creativity, tone, space opera tropes, etc.. In other words, fun with occasional overacting that fit with the overall show, and even more creativity (IMO) than Andromeda. And since you must have watched SG-1, even a “big honkin’ space gun” type weapon that would even make the Goa’uld poop themselves (or their hosts ;) ).

random000 4 points 4 days ago.

Andromeda is good, but Farscape is very superior. Not once did it search for itself or the arc. It always knew what it was & where it was going with laser-sharp writing & long term serialization. Other than Lexa Doig who portrayed Andromeda ship’s AI was married to SG-1’s Michael Shanks, the only way the two shows were similar was in that the primary vessels were alive or had living AI. Farscape was more similar to The Lexx in that regard - another underrated space opera.

Andromeda’s strength was in the entire ensemble cast, who were more capable than the central star. The show also introduced quantum mechanics in a very mainstream way to provide story elements. Until that time, that area of science was pretty obscure to the laity.

Andromeda (2000)
Hans Zarkov 2 points 4 days ago.

It started out well but that last season, where the “already pushing the Sorbo saturation limit” became “Sorbo overload” really kinda messed things up for me, as did the “Hercules in Space” plot/narrative.
The show was at its best when it was focused on restoring the Commonwealth and coping with the Magog threat…kinda like ST: Discovery last season, restoring the Federation and dealing with the alien species accidentally destroying planets after The Burn.

But by the Great Ones (Roddenberry and JMS), I can’t watch anything with Sorbo in it anymore after suffering through his Christo-rightwing fanaticism on Twitter for so many, many years. Shame too, he was never a very good actor, but he was perfect for Sam Raimi’s Hercules.

random000 2 points 4 days ago.

It would be easy to tangentially focus on that, but that sums it up correctly. That’s perfect ✔

Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971)

For those who really dig Roddenberry, then this non-science fiction drive-in flick was big. Has stars like Angie Dickinson & Kojak Telly Savalas, but also for anyone who grew up with 1970s superheroes on Saturday morning, there was Captain Marvel-Shazam followed by Isis, played by JoAnna Cameron. She’s also in this. Includes James Doohan (Scotty), Disney’s Keenan Wynn, Planet Of The Apes Roddy McDowall. Also has drive-in divas like Joy Bang, Barbara Leigh, June Fairchild & Gretchen Burrell.

Strange New World (1975)
random000 1 points 4 days ago.

After Roddenberry’s Genesis ii, John Saxon starred in this sci-fi story that has that doomy 70s vibe found in films like this. Growing up, we remember him from The Six Million Dollar Man, but he was in everything including Nightmare On Elm Street, Queen Of Blood, & The Bees.

Andromeda (2000)
dbob 5 points 5 days ago.

two thumbs up

random000 4 points 5 days ago*.

It is a good show, in spite of Sorbo rather than because of him. After Trek TOS, The Great Bird had material that he tried to turn into series, but only got as far as a film & a pilot. Those were Genesis II & Planet Earth. They didn’t go where he hoped they would go, but after he died his wife Majel Barrett took that material about Dylan Hunt & divided it. One became Earth Final Conflict & the other Andromeda.

Both shows shift gears a lot before they find themselves, so some seasons may be preferred over others since some of the changes in tone, cast & character design are very radical. Each show wasn’t short on its own ambition.

Norma Jean & Marilyn (1996)
random000 2 points 9 days ago*.

Norma Jean Mortensen portrayed by Ashley Judd transforms herself into the greatest character portrayal of her life, Marilyn Monroe as done by Mira Sorvino. The film is interesting for that reason alone, using different actors to show the difference, but it doesn’t go deep or deviate from the character assassination that’s typical of bios about her. It’s good for it’s era, but not surprising.

George White's Scandals (1945)
random000 1 points 9 days ago*.

George White was an impresario not unlike Flo Ziegfeld who offered large review shows that almost every film star & musician performed in. Oodles of talent such as the greatest dancer of all time Eleanor Powell, tapper Ann Miller, The Three Stooges, most of the cast of The Wizard Of Oz, comics like Joan Davis, pianist-comic Jimmy Durante (Frosty The Snowman), Dolores Costello (who’s that? That is Drew Barrymore’s grandma, whom comic Lou Costello named himself after he loved her so much), Zanuck’s protege the great Alice Faye (married to band leader Phil Harris), silent film great Louise Brooks, and more.

The review ran about as long as The Ziegfeld Follies did, & wrapped up about the same time. George made 5 films & was in some of them as himself. He even wrote the screenplay for The Ziegfeld Follies with Astaire, Judy Garland & Lucy Ball- as well as Duffy’s Tavern (which is where the Archie Bunker character grew from as well as Moe the bartender from The Simpsons, & also a few other cartoon characters).

Daffy Duck in Hollywood (Short 1938) (1938)
random000 1 points 9 days ago.

There are 3 distinct eras of Daffy. He began as an utterly unmanageable nutcase as imagined by Tex Avery. After Tex went over to MGM in 1942, famed Jerry Lewis director Frank Tashlin restyled Daffy as a pushy rude loudmouth in the screwball comedy style, and he was often paired with Porky as a comedy team. Then Chuck Jones got a hold of him in 1951 & transformed him into a very self-centered greedy coward, famously pairing him with Bugs Bunny.

This is the wacked out wing-nut version of The Duck when he really was actually Daffy.
