Details:

Visiting the purpose-built Waiheke Island jewellery studio of Christine Hafermalz-Wheeler, we instantly enter ‘A world of Difference’. The mediaeval-style workbench; the shape and colour of her gemstones; designs influenced by landscape, politics and minerals: many norms and conventions of the jewellery genre are challenged here. Director Stephanie Bennett ‘looks into the mind of an artist’, tracing Christine’s journey from oppressive 1950s East Germany, daring escape, through apprenticeship and establishment in Stuttgart, to where we return for 40th anniversary celebrations, and presently New Zealand. Events and exhibits in Beijing’s Capital Museum, England’s ‘Downton Abbey’, New York’s 5th Ave emphasise the international scope of ‘Christine…The Artist Goldsmith’. ‘She goes into the world with such openness; she doesn’t make jewellery with her head, she makes it with her whole being.’
