Father James Nolan, a compassionate Catholic priest of Irish-American descent, oversees a mainly Latino parish in Los Angeles. One evening, as he is preparing to close down the church for the night, he stumbles across one of his parishioners, Tony Jimenez, in what he believes is contemplative prayer. Upon further investigation, the priest soon realizes that Tony’s “quiet prayer” literally has life and death consequences attached to it. An argument ensues between the two on issues of culture, power, and the personal decisions we make. While Father Nolan engages in this battle of intellect and conscience, his own memories of a past ethical struggle hauntingly flare up inside him. Finally, Father Nolan leaves Tony with a choice: to choose whether a life will be lost or saved on this night.
