The Brave One (2007)

Good. Jodie Foster as a reluctant bad-ass. She never disappoints. With Terrence Howard, Mary Steenburgen and Naveen Andrews. 3.5/5

Is the first one good? I usually like to watch the original first, if decent.

Kung Fu (1972) S1 E10
SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago.

Jodie Foster at 10! I think she’s probably the best child actor ever. That she could read at age 3 probably helped. And it doesn’t hurt that she was a gorgeous young girl. (I hope I’m not being weird, but you can’t deny she is so pretty in this episode.) Enormous talent in that little package.

Atomic Blonde (2017)
SJ Robert 3 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Excellent action flick. Theron kicks ass and did all her own fight scenes, which are some of the most realistic I’ve seen, even slowing down at times due to exhaustion. The plot was complicated and took a couple watches to catch all the nuances of the story, which I liked (rather than being spoon-fed). The acting and cinematography were great, with a backdrop of constant stress due to the story happening right during the Berlin Wall’s falling. The use of framing the movie as an operational postmortem interview was done very well. The multiple twists at the end were also very good. I had a completely opposite reaction than the commenter above me. I think this movie will become a classic in the badass femme-fatale genre, like Nikita.
There is talk about a John Wick-Atomic Blond crossover sequel. Frankly I’m a bit skeptical about that. They have very different feels, with Atomic Blond having a more grittier feel with aspects of high level intelligence management, suspicious “allies,” international intrigue, etc. where Wick is more of a loner dude dealing with more local thugs. Just my take.

Ava (2020)
UGuess 1 points 3 years ago.

Thanks, didn’t have to but you did!

SJ Robert 2 points 2 years ago.

I can also suggest Atomic Blond and the original Nikita movie if you’re looking for female leads in spy-action movies. Nikita is a classic. And Charlize Theron did all her own fight scenes in Atomic Blond which are more realistic than most, and also has a complicated and compelling plot.

Ava (2020)
SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago.

Fun action flick. Not the greatest but better than all the negative reviews here. I thought Geena Davis was very good, and Malkovich always.

The Highwaymen (2019)
SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago.

And since no one else has mentioned it yet, Kathy Bates was also excellent. She’s one of those top shelf actors that makes any movie she’s in a lot better.

1st to Die (2003)
SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago*.

Avoid. Big name actors but horrible script and editing. Completely unrealistic and annoying relationships, situations, responses to things, etc. continuously. You will not sit through this.

Oblivion (2013)
SJ Robert 2 points 2 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

I predict this will be a classic. A rich and deep sci-fi, but also a deep romance/love story. Is it a sci-fi wrapped in a love story or a love story wrapped in a sci-fi? In fact, the love story IS the sci-fi, and vice-versa. A lot to think about and unpack in this haunting tale. Looking back, it was because Jack’s love was so great for Julia that the Tek couldn’t wipe that completely from his memory. And if not for that, the story wouldn’t have unfolded and concluded the way it did. In other words, it was man’s capacity to love greatly - the power of love - that saved humanity.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
gypsy soul 6 points 4 years ago.

I kept saying, “I am not a Tom Cruise fan”, then I realized how I basically love all of his movies. Some more than others but this one is very near the top. 8.5/10

SJ Robert 7 points 2 years ago.

Really hilarious. I think you just captured 90% of people. There’s something annoying about the guy but you gotta admit he’s got excellent screen presence. And he just has a fantastic agent - who gets him into great films consistently. So many great ones. A recent favorite is Oblivion.

The Name of the Game (1968)
SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago*.

Loved this show as a kid. I think it was the first “wheel series,” with 3 main characters with each episode rotating the main character for that episode. And the whole series rotated with a couple other series (MacMillan and Wife and I think Columbo) on the NBC Friday Night Movie slot, or something like that. You would always wonder which of the 3 (Gene Barry, Robert Stack or Tony Franciosa) would be the lead in that night’s episode. The other two would typically not be seen in that episode, but might be heard on a phone call, etc.
Actually, I think the term “wheel series” refers to the NBC Friday Night Movie, rotating 3 different TV series. But the show also had its lead rotate, so it was actually a double-wheel or wheel within a wheel??

Thief (1981)
TX2Guns 1 points 2 years ago.

In the canon of Heist films up until this point, this one by Michael Mann stands alone and is a masterpiece not only as a crime story but also in firearms realism. Fast forward to 1995 and you get the the all time heavyweight champion of heist films, Heat, which is not only a masterpiece of crime fiction but also again, in firearms realism and urban combat. The Shootout at the bank job is pure perfection. Michael Mann as a Director stands alone in terms of firearm realism in film, no contest.

SJ Robert 1 points 2 years ago.

I guess it’s a case of “each to his own” with regard to what makes a classic. You obviously give much higher priority to firearms realism. I appreciate that quality, in all action films. But for heist films in particular I give more priority to the creativity of the heist. That’s why Topkapi, which predates Thief and Heat and The Italian Job, is the seminal film of the heist genre, IMHO.

One Spy Too Many (1966)

Very cool and fun Man From UNCLE movie. With gorgeous Yvonne Craig! (original Batgirl, green Orion girl Marta from Star Trek TOS, etc.) Nice!

Chicago P.D. (2014) S6 E18

For a show that has never had a bad episode, this one was particularly good. That ending. Life (and death) in Chicago.

The Bookshop (2017)
SJ Robert 0 points 3 years ago.

This movie is categorized as drama, but perhaps it’s better suited in the horror bin. That “community” (if you can call it that) are nothing but monsters. What horrible people! Those Brits - always top notch acting. 3.5/5

Max Payne (2008)
dinklefaust 0 points 3 years ago.

report link if which one that happens with if it has no audio.

SJ Robert 0 points 3 years ago.

It’s just the 2nd half of the 3 1/2 hour video, when it plays the movie over again, that it has no audio. The first “showing” of the movie (which lasts about 1 hr. 43 min’s) has normal audio. So, I didn’t think it required reporting.

Olga! Gorgeous as usual. 3 hrs 25 min’s! But actually it’s over and repeats at 1:43 without audio.

better than I expected, 3.5/5

Hitman (2007)
SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago*.

Olga at 27 (yum). The more I see her in movies the more I’m distracted from her jaw dropping beauty with the fact that she’s a really good actress. Her acting talents are broad. She was great in Centurion without saying a word the whole movie due to her character having had her tongue cut out when young. And she’s also excellent in Oblivion, The Water Diviner, and this movie, all different roles she does well.

Commando (1985)

Took me awhile but I finally guessed correctly that Schwarzenegger’s kidnapped daughter is a very young and cute Alyssa Milano, at 12.

Classic series, but I’m realizing that all the episodes are so sad at the end, at least so far.

The Specialist (1994)
SJ Robert 3 points 3 years ago*.

Good ‘90’s action flick. Couple of gorgeous Sharon Stone nude scenes. Steiger and Woods are always good. Even Eric Robert’s adds to the all-star cast. Fun and entertaining. Never trust a misogynist’s review (the comment below). Solid 3/5.

The Girl in the Fog (2017)
SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago.

Good murder-mystery. A “thinking” story with unusual twists and character roles. Recommended. Subtitles are good.

Unlocked (2017)
SJ Robert 3 points 3 years ago.

Nice spy/action flick with twists and turns. Also has Michael Douglas (not listed). Credit to the very good writing by Peter O’Brien; I like complicated spy stories. Gave it 5 just to bring it up from undeserving low stars. It’s a solid 4. Love Noomi ever since Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. They should franchise this and make a sequel; keep the writer.

Good People Go to Hell, Saved People Go to Heaven (2013)
booger -1 points 3 years ago.

And, I disagree with you. Atheism is not the disbelief in god(s) but the knowledge that there are no god(s). Morality is Humans being Human and nothing more. You stated that you disagreed with my stance that the other side of religion is atheism, ok, so what is?

SJ Robert 7 points 3 years ago.

Atheism is simply not believing in and not worshiping a god. There doesn’t need to be “knowledge” or certainty about it. And atheism certainly isn’t the “opposite side” of religion, at least with regard to morality or doing good. There are many atheists who have a strict code of ethics. It’s just not propelled by a fear of a god watching and judging or impending retribution in an afterlife. In a sense you could even argue that many atheists are MORE moral than religious folks, since they are FREELY moral without any offered transactional benefit of receiving eternal heaven in return for good behavior. But in actuality, numerous studies have shown that prison populations pretty much reflect the general population: same % christians, jews, muslims, agnostics and atheists, etc. inside of prison as out. So there’s no actual evidence or any independent indicator of one religion being more moral and good than another, or religion vs. atheism. It all comes down to the individual.

Early espionage classic from one of the original master spy story tellers, Eric Ambler. Good audio/video copy, too!

Centurion (2010)

This is destined to become a classic. One of Olga Kurylenko’s best. And she doesn’t speak a word. She’s a marvelous actress, as well as being so gorgeous.

The Water Diviner (2014)
SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago.

Really good movie, engrossing.
If Olga Kurylenko wasn’t so jaw droppingly gorgeous, more people would realize what an excellent actress she is. Setting aside her beauty, her body of work shows she deserves an Oscar. Some of my favorites of hers are Centurion and Oblivion.

Archer (2009) S8 E1
SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago*.

Fans of Archer know that as the TV seasons change, Archer and the cast change their whole character scenario. Here in Season 8 Archer is a Private Investigator. In case viewers don’t recognize, this is a play on the book series by (and surely a tribute to) Ross MacDonald who wrote (in many critic’s opinion) the BEST PI novel series, with his PI character… Lew Archer. Pick up any Ross MacDonald novel and you will be hooked. I started with The Chill and voraciously read every other Lew Archer novel I could get my hands on. Some of the movies made are good, but none as good as the books.

Redemption Day (2021)
Rob Apples 0 points 3 years ago.

I’m not even about to watch this. Can someone tell Hollywood that this story is sooooo tired? These aren’t even spoilers. Bad guy knicks wife/gf or whatever and good guy has to kick ass to get her back with the final bad guy getting blown up in some cliche way but not before the good guy has a quick one liner. It’s literally a tale as old as time.

SJ Robert 0 points 3 years ago.

At least you admit not even watching it, so we know how much to weigh your score. Of course - most movie plots by now are not new, but remakes and variations. Originality is not the only reason to score a movie above 1/5. For old plots like this one, the movie may still be excellent if the production, acting, story telling/writing/editing is good with some twists or variations to make it interesting and fun. Essentially, nobody who watches these kinds of movie watches for originality - the very reason you’re critical.

This show has grown so increasingly bizarre that now even the super power characters don’t know what the f… is going on. And if they don’t know, that explains why I sure don’t know a damn thing about what’s going on here. But I’m enjoying it nonetheless!! Great mind-f… show if you like this sort of stuff.

Nicholson as retired cop obsessed with solving a child murder(s) but over time it may be affecting his judgement. Great acting. Lots of big name actors in excellent small parts not mentioned in the description: Sam Shepard, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave, Mickey Rourke, Harry Dean Stanton, Robin Wright Penn, Tom Noonan. Directed by Sean Penn. 3.5/4

SJ Robert 1 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Lots to think about. (Spoilers! Do NOT Read before viewing!) At the end Tom Noonan’s character was indeed going to meet the girl at the park, and was the tall man and giver of the porcupine gifts - so Nicholson’s character was right, sort of. But even the tall man who gives porcupine gifts still doesn’t mean/prove he was the killer! But brilliant how Nicholson’s character decided to buy the rural store in the middle of where the murders took place to “retire” in the area, so that everyone living in the area would sooner or later come by his store to buy gas so he could look out for the black station wagon and catch all suspicious license plates. Sad that at the end he never knew that the suspect was indeed on his way to the park - that he was “right.” And never knowing that just led him deeper into madness vs. if he knew then his life would’ve straightened out, presumably.

Sunshine (2007)

Just OK. Good story. Good production. Poor casting. I hate serious space flight - all Earth life hangs in the balance - movies that are cast with too-young, too-cute, too-immature, too-selfish, too-unprofessional astronauts that get in silly fights, etc. The fake-ness compared to real and serious astronauts that would be on this kind of a mission is just distracting and irritating throughout. C’mon, nobody double-checks critical calculations of which all life on Earth hangs in the balance? Just too many ridiculous things that spoil what could’ve been a good movie. The blurriness at the end was also overdone and annoying, and ridiculous regarding the surprise “bad guy.” Would be 2/5 but I gave an extra point ‘cuz I love the genre. But really - too many space sci-fi movies are ruined by poor young/cutesy/unprofessional casting, I guess to appeal to young audiences. All these young actors here are good actors - I like them in other movies. But just mis-cast in this one. I’m actually willing to overlook the huge, silly plot-hole flaw (that a “big” nuke is somehow supposed to reignite a dying sun, as if the actual minuscule nuke (the whole planet Earth is minuscule compared to the sun) is anything even close in energy to a hum-drum random solar flare, and that there’s no reason/physics to suggest a nuke would effect the sun by making it get brighter, etc.), as most sci-fi is weak on the sci side. But at least the story, writing and cast should be somewhat realistic.

Whoa you got to see him live? That’s awesome! What a trip that must’ve been. It’s always so fun to see someone mutually absorbed in their work—- I mean like, the art is creating them while they create art. It’s not something that can be faked or produced, it just -is-. That’s why I like him. I hope our comments lead to others discovering this fun musician.

SJ Robert 5 points 3 years ago.

You obviously get it. Cheers, to the joyful noise and showing how creativity and imagination can feed the soul and be the fertilizer for new sounds and new music and new directions far beyond the familiar planet we inhabit!

Death and the Maiden (1995)

Probably the best movie I’ve seen with this ‘guilty/not guilty; possibly crazy/mistaken accuser’ plot. Very nicely done - how just 3 excellent actors can fill out a full movie with not one boring moment.

Tales from the Crypt (1972)
SJ Robert 2 points 3 years ago.

I was 14 when I saw this in a theater when it came out in ‘72. I consider this classic horror - the real thing. It was the first really high impact deeply scary movie I’d ever seen. Kept me awake at night for days and even now gives me shivers if I let myself think about it - I try not to. It’s that nightmarish. My friends and I were speechless after this. The terror penetrated to our bones. Maybe if I watched it again now it wouldn’t be so impactful, but back then this kind of movie was new. Nothing prepared us. I think we were too young. If I had kids I don’t think I’d let them see it until they were 18. You will either think this is truly sick or at the highest artistic level for the genre. It is both.

Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise (2006)
cloroxbleach 5 points 3 years ago.

Oh, this is a wonderful upload, I can’t wait to revisit it. If anyone out there is unfamiliar with Sun Ra and you like experimental music—- you will dig this. Sun Ra was avant-garde even for that scene, but there’s a distinct lack of pretentiousness that makes even his most bizarre works inviting and curious. There are few artists out there anymore who have this type of enmeshment of their inner and outer selves, tangling with their creative blood, manifesting (in this case) as sounds. Roll one up and chill out with Sun Ra on a boring day, you won’t be disappointed.

SJ Robert 4 points 3 years ago*.

Looking forward to this. I once saw Sun Ra and his Cosmic Arkestra back in the early ‘80’s, I think. At one point, in the middle of the cacophony, he stopped playing, pulled out his telescope, and looked up through it - to receive further instructions from his home planet, Saturn - and then resumed playing. He was (is) quite a spirit.
