lol Finally A Doctor Who with Class and Passion
JadeEnigma's comments
No. Just no. Non British actor, especially no. Matt was good for 2 seasons, the last one not so much. You knew he was ready to go to Hollywood.
I never liked him anyway. The worst Doctor by far. He always struck me as a bipolar Pee Wee Herman off his meds.
We watched this last night, and it was disturbing. Inflicting further trauma on a developing mind does not heal or help manage any already existing trauma or correct bad choices or bad behaviour. That it does is an old wives’ tail. Fear doesn’t change anything for the better. That there was so much sexual abuse as well is certainly not surprising.
Thanks for the reminder of this film. For as hard as it was for Huston to make, it’s a classic that still holds up for everyone who was in it, especially the two stars for whom it was their last. Although for Marilyn, there was at least the unfinished 1962 remake of My Favorite Wife called Something’s Gotta Give. Will make a post for that soon.

Niagara will always be my personal favourite. I used to live nearby, and would give tours to visiting friends of all the filming locations, including where she did the longest walk-away ever recorded on film.
Looking forward to this season of True Detective with Jodi Foster as the main character.
Canada, huh? Did you ever see Judith Merril’s “Un-Doctor” outros? I came across this gem a few years ago while researching the origins of science fiction conventions:
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xt5hfu
I’d never heard of Merril; but as soon as I found out who she was, she achieved instant apotheosis in my personal pantheon of unsung culture heroes. I bet you’ll agree.
Well, the episode description either “white washes” sexual violence with PUNISHED, or the series doesn’t follow the book.
I guess I’ll find out which one is correct.
Some of my happiest childhood memories are of being part of a Doctor Who fanclub that would staff the phone banks for the PBS telethons. :-D
I remember those! I was actually across the border in Canada so I was unable to participate, but I loved to watch them on the nearby Buffalo PBS station.
quite liked jon pertwee, he was my first dr( yes i’m old lol) does anyone out there remember watching the pilot when it was first broadcast??????
He was mine, as well. Watching The Doctor on PBS back in the day was a tradition in my house.
The new guy was great! Full on Doctor as he was meant to be. Unique and charismatic, with a real flair for stylish clothes and stylish entrances. Right on, good choice RTD!
Alternate theory: Russell T Davies was a fan of Ncuti Gatwa from his role on Sex Education. He certainly would have been familiar, if not a fan of the show. Davies made his name (and changed television forever) as the creator of “Queer as Folk,” the show Sex Education is most consistently compared to.
You’re right that Idris Elba would have been perfect for the role (apart from being hopelessly straight), just like fan-favorite Tilda Swinton would have been perfect for the first female doctor. But neither eventuality was ever remotely possible. There’s such a thing as too famous. They already had to sell the show to Disney to afford the production costs they have now! Elba would probably cost more for one episode than the budget for a whole series.
With Trevor Noah, I’m not sure the fact he’s not British is a deal breaker, but the fact he’s not an actor surely is. Really, if you’ve decided on casting a gay Black British actor with proven ability to carry a show, the list of candidates is… not as long as one might like.
I think the new guy’s great! How exciting that he’s not only a black man, but gay as well. About time! Bring on the new series!
He should be for a computer that wore tennis shoes
No. Hell, no. Maybe. No.
This was great. We went into this expecting a somewhat true-to-life biopic but discovered a parody of true-to-life biopics as only Weird Al can do parodies. Brilliant, and very enjoyable.
You’re totally correct. It was really more of a Nash & Young thing =P
Compare me to Neil Young anytime. Did you know that after years of living in the US with nothing but a green card, he became a citizen only to vote against Trump? I loved that. Almost want to do the same, but no time before the next election.
Crosby might say that this is all signs of a hidden drinking problem mixed with too much acoustic guitar playing. Unfortunately, he’d have to haunt your house to deliver the news, and this might set the doggo off, resulting in more head bangage.
Uh oh! Like Crosby himself, my cats also get snorty! Better clear the area!
OMG I have a dog that does the same thing! He also sneezes so hard that he’s banged his head on the floor more than a few times.
No idea. But will get some Manic Panic for you if you find out ( ̄︶ ̄)>
snort would that I could. Actually, they could use more mods around here, been thinking of offering my services. Could you imagine??
Wes Anderson + stop motion animation + Clooney as a Fox + Wes himself as Weasel + Bill Murray as a Badger = a good time. Right up there with giving wet willies to your little brother.
I never had a little brother, so I can only imagine. I did love this film, though!
Boy I miss these guys! When Frank sailed off I actually shed tears.
Boy this is a fun and entertaining series. The cast is well put-together with some wonderful chemistry. That I recognise much of the places they film helps. Man I miss Melbourne.
Highly recommended for an engaging family dramady worthy of some binging!
Let me put it like this the first film is quite easily better then this film is.
Waiting as we all are. You?
Oh snap, never even looked at the release date, only saw the description. So, um, not yet but probably will.
Jennifer Connolly as an impressive comic, good acting, strange story, also good direction.. also i just really empathise with the main characters particular ennui, isolating toxicity…can i identify with all the characters and their strange relations with each other? yeah lets do that.. not sure its finished with me either.
This was surprisingly good. The characters were not as engaging or as developed as I’d hoped, and they did use a few more common Sci-fi tropes, but overall we were able to accept them and enjoy this film. It had a very interesting spin, too. Recomended!
Yes, it looks and sounds good, I believe he plays Satan in this!
This film is so bad that it makes the original cut of Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice look good by comparison goodbye DC Extended Universe you won’t be missed.
I’m going to wait to see it, but I do not hold great hope. I was not fond of the first one, and to be honest, Superhero fatigue has set in all around and It would take a great film to get over that.
this was SO GOOD. so upset i never heard of it at the time and it’s been cancelled. proper essential of its kind i think
I know, right?! I thought it was brilliantly original, but then it left us hanging!
This story is fascinating and true. Look it up on YouTube you’ll see people covering it. Haven’t seen the movie yet hopefully gets uploaded
Brittany Murphy passed away 14 years ago today. My viewing day is dedicated to her vibrant, shining presense. She is missed.
I suggested Myth America by Kevin M. Kruse and Julian E. Zelizer to Jade yesterday. I highly recommend it.
I took a look at it last night in bed. I think I’m really going to enjoy it, thank you!
So many people are now fighting NOT to have children learn real history, but continue to learn the white man’s version of history, like I did. I’ve been completely absorbed with books and media about the real history of the world, especially this insane country (U.S.) I live in. I’ll have to take this in small bites, because — 3 hours — but I’m going to watch it.
NOPE đź‘Žđź‘Žđź‘Žđź‘Žđź‘Ž they tried a Mexican Peter Parker and FAILED
LOL yep. They succeeded stupendously. This was a terrific movie and a great lead character.
