The American Runestone (2020) S2 E1
expresso 1 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This is a beguiling, charming, childlike, more organic version of the Curse of Oak Island. Peter Stromare is an eight year old in a man’s body. He has the conviction and single mindedness of an eight year old. He has that sense of wonder that we all lose as we get older. He also has a high level of Soccer Mom Factor - the social intelligence necessary to herd a group of fellow travelers to include them in his narrative and the kindness to weave everyone into the tapestry without condemning the clear wackos. It’s like a 21st century version Canterbury Tales. It dithers around, and drags here and there…do something else while you’re watching it, and hone in on the good parts. Long live citizen archaeology.

…Oak Island fan, STEM therefore pretty skeptical, but more open-minded than most. I love new technology being applied to all this stuff. I was initially intrigued on them applying the newer electronic technology being used by geologists, to this stone. And then Scott Wolter comes out in this episode with his hooked X / Templars / Jesus genealogy / Newton tower / Henry Sinclair / Unified Theory of Everything in this episode. Pffft. Another wacko. Still, pure entertainment value from this show - if only for the childlike wonder and delight expressed by Peter Stromare, a true raconteur, with so much warmth and intimacy. We all need more of that, especially in these times.

I like Timothy Olyphant as an actor and really liked him in the FX series “Justified” as well as the film (remake of) “The Crazies” too. Watching him in “The Mandalorian” episode? I STILL kind of thought of him as Raylan Givens but on Tattooine.

this movie was funny, I couldn’t stop watching it. I mean it’s bad, what do you expect, but it was oddly entertaining. The bad guy was the dude from the show Air Wolf, and Tony Curtis is so bad he’s good. Not a great movie, but worth a laugh. Plus it was cool to see a few shots of NYC in the 80’s. Since I work in the city it’s neat to see some its past.

Utopia (2020)
shesmydriver 3 points 3 years ago.

Had to move on after 15 minutes into the first episode. The filming was terrible; like a bad fandom movie. The acting, if you can call it that, was so lifeless and the dialogue…well I guess you get the idea. This doesn’t even come close to the UK production and quality. I’m a huge fantasy / science fiction fan and this was really disappointing.

expresso 2 points 3 years ago.

Yeah now I’m on the same page with you.

Utopia (2020)
expresso 2 points 3 years ago*.

This made me go binge the original which is more film than it is TV. If you are a visuals fan you have to see that. Wide screen, geometric framing, color palettes. Intentional selection of every single set design object, vehicles, wallpaper, lighting, costume. It’s a different work of visual art scene by scene. The original is jarring and isn’t going to fit a lot of people’s idea of TV. I didn’t think I’d be as affected by the story this time around. It turns out that even knowing everything that is going to happen, sitting around in quarantine and time to do a lot of thinking makes this a very nervy watch. If you have a hard time understanding Brit accents I recommend finding English subs online and adding those until you get used to the way they talk, I have to do that with Scots English. 5/5

Agreed. Writing and acting was amazing. Shows like this get dropped and the Alienist hangs around, because those characters are more foregiveable. They’re more palatable. These characters are too flawed and real, and unlike Deadwood and some others of this caliber, it’s very very dark. I’m a nerd and as a child I had very old relatives who lived at the turn of the century. I think a lot about what the world was like before technology so I can’t get enough.

Desus & Mero (2016)
Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S18 E28
Eelectric 2 points 3 years ago.

True, Bill does need that audience, even if they’re fake, Ben Bailey (another stay-at-home comedian with a podcast) also uses canned laughter as white noise basically.
I understand that the few audience members do pitch in a little extra to compensate, but yeah.. it doesn’t always work out so well.
I mean, it wasn’t the worst, but i also don’t specifically need to see/hear audiences to begin with, but Bill insists on being Live, so yeah, it comes with the program.

But yeah, it does sound familiar haha.
Mr. Cough-a-thon never ceases to show his insecurities to the world.

I really like how Seth Meyers dealt with it, i’d almost say the show improved without the studio audience.
I loved how his monologues and Closer Looks became more and more absurd with the addition of all the characters.
Too bad it’s slowly turning back to the old format.
I kinda turned off from Colbert since covid, although he did improve, but i just haven’t been feeling it lately.
Trevor actually got off the best, his transition was pretty good, as Seth started off the worst, but i think Seth also grew the most.
Although, i haven’t checked on Fallon, Conan, Kimmel or what’s his name, Corden, since i never really watched them to begin with. I like Conan, but i just never really watch him.

I haven’t given Wilmore’s show a go yet, i used to like his old show, Grace Parra’s “Nightly” bit used to always crack me up.
I kinda miss The Opposition with Jordan Klepper, his show was similar to the Weekly with Charlie Pickering, but for USA, and i liked the “reporters” on it.
They also kinda started with pointing out the gaslighting that people are talking about a lot now.

But yeah, didn’t intend to write this whole story haha, thanks for reading

expresso 1 points 3 years ago*.

Wilmore’s new gig is good. He’s just so wise. You should do that. I agree Seth Myers was better imprisoned in an attic. I hung in there with Colbert during home imprisonment but don’t like him broadcasting from his office. I don’t watch Corden either, but there was a bit when everyone was in a gap and he was still on. He set up his garage as his studio. He’s the most tech savvy and he was quite watchable. It’s ironic about Maher - I think Maher’s standup is always kind of shitty but his interviews and panels and closing are outstanding. He has to do what he has to do to connect with who he sees himself as, but the rest of us need him to be the other thing.

Kudos for the show runners moving this along in a way that pretty much compels a couch potato to lock in. I’m conflicted. I’m a fan of your basic antihero vehicle. I think I’m reacting to the fact that there are so many antiheroes at one time. I was very spoiled by Gotham. I think I hoped this would be less Cheese Whiz and more like that and now I’m a bit in hate watching mode.

Raised by Wolves (2020)
marino4ever 11 points 3 years ago*.

The first 3 episodes were very good. A promising start.

The two leads, Amanda Collin (Mother) and Abubakar Salim (Father) are fantastic. Their characters and performances command attention at all times. I’m not entirely sold on the central conflict of the story, as it felt heavy handed. I hope it justifies itself in the long run, although I have my doubts. Still, I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

expresso 3 points 3 years ago*.

I thought about what you said. Yeah. I think the heavy-handed-ness is a throwback to classic Original Star Trek. Think William Shatner and We Are Making This Point By Hitting You With A 2x4. In other words, it’s (glorious) melodrama. To me people are reacting exactly the same way as when the Witcher came out (how dare you not be serious !!! with my TV) and that is refreshing because we all have too much deadly serious on our plates now.

Raised by Wolves (2020)
expresso 7 points 3 years ago*.

I think I have finally figured out how I’m responding to this as sci fi and why it’s disappointing to those who want science-y wondrous future technology space opera. It has a very organic retro original Star Trek / Philip K Dick / 2001 / Heinlien vibe going on. It requires human beings to figure out what they are capable of doing with nothing but their own ingenuity and their personal social capital. 5/5 for making me actually think deep thoughts

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S18 E28
Eelectric 5 points 3 years ago*.

Oh boy.. gonna be a tough one to sit through, not because of the guests (looking forward to Bernie), but there’s a lady in the audience that laughs way too loud and way too often, i’m only 1:58 minutes in and starting to develop cringe cramps, hope she turns it down soon..
EDIT: The guests were good.

expresso 2 points 3 years ago*.

You know, I can relate. I feel sorry for him. Maher is a classic road comedian and it throws him off not to have that pack of animals out there in the dark to play off of. He has been struggling with covid. Funny how the most loudmouth opinionated people don’t automatically have the outrageous self-esteem they project, because they need adoration from a huge crowd. Sound familiar?? ;)

It’s hard for all of late night. Their timing has been destroyed. Some hosts have gotten better at adapting over time (Colbert).

I try to remember that they can only have around 5 people in that huge room. And every single one of them has been asked to make reactions as if they were 20 audience members.

Desus & Mero are pretty much masters at this. I think this is because they are not road comedians and have been doing a podcast for a decade. And, it helps that they have a producer who jumps in and does ‘color commentary’ from time to time (much like Charlamagne the God’s show). Larry Wilmore’s show also very good at overcoming this hurdle.

Sorry, Bill. Covid sucks. I still watch.

Good info to know DamoB78! I haven’t seen the original series/iteration; Is it really that good? Should I watch the original series first or are they both good enough to stand on their own?

expresso 2 points 3 years ago*.

@PacificLilly yes. Absoutely a must see. Not necessary in tandem with this and frankly, I think doing them both at the same time will distract one from the other. Think of the original as a very, very expensive meal featuring <your favorite thing on the menu when you’re out treating yourself> at a very, very expensive one-of-a-kind restaurant. You don’t want to do that in close proximity to going out somewhere and getting <your favorite thing on the menu when you’re out having a basic eating out experience> at a solid restaurant which you’ve been to before. (If you’re not a cinema geek this very well may not apply)
