Girl at the Window (2022)
YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

What a maddening film! No cops would behave this way, dismissing any tips, knowing full well there is a serial killer on the loose! And what mother discounts every single thing her daughter says - even if the daughter is still grieving her father? This is the worst mother-figure I’ve seen in awhile - and I watch a bunch of Lifetime dreck! Why the need for the incessant flashbacks to a family tragedy, making us think the daughter actually IS crazy??
Worst of all, for me, anyway, was the completely off-kilter reactions of some characters in scary or dangerous situations, who crack wise and become flippant or even defiant. And the killer’s motives? He admits it himself, that he really doesn’t have any.
The actress who plays the unlikeable daughter on Harrow is also kind of unlikeable here.

Amityville Karen (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Update:
One look at the title tells us right off that this is a crazy stinker of deluxe magnitude, funny and awful. It’s like some zero-budget fan film. Actors read their lines poorly, or forget them altogether. The zany plot makes no sense - but I’ll give a perverse credit to the writers for trying to sell THE most tenuous relationship to the Amityville franchise, hands down.
Have yourself a glass of wine and attempt to sit through this travesty if you dare! The “Karen” here really is a meanie, so there’s that…
Cheers!

Troll (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Lots of fun here! Others have mentioned the resemblance to kaiju like Gojira and Kong, and that’s very apt to describe this. The big-bad isn’t your normal monster, as he comes from legends and myths we almost never see or hear of in movies today. The human characters are pretty typical, but the old father stands out as the first one who really gets the situation and runs with it. I think it’s worth a watch; be sure to turn on subs.

The Devil's Hour (2022) S1 E6
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

What an absorbing story! At six episodes, this managed to offer plenty of plot development and detail that was so essential to maintaining the eerie tone throughout. Nothing dragged, thanks to some fascinating acting from the leads. The little boy was especially great, and creepy as hell. I was riveted and binged this in two days. The ending works, since it gives the viewer lots to (still) mull over in light of the plot points that were established earlier. A winner!

Amityville Karen (2022)

Oh I GOTTA watch this, just for that crazy title alone!! They have officially run the Amityville franchise off the cliff LOL

I’m on the case - will be back to report later!😂

Plebs (2013) S5 Special
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

A fabulously funny ending to a zany, uproarious series! I was hooked from the very beginning, years ago, and laughed my ass off every single episode! This is one show the Brits really hit out of the park, with lovable scene-stealer Grumio and his hapless mates stumbling and fumbling their way through life in ancient Rome. Perfect casting!

I wasn’t sure the show would be back after the pandemic, so I was really pleased to hear that we were getting this series wrap-up movie bringing the characters’ story arcs to a hilarious close. Delightful! 😊

The Groundstar Conspiracy (1972)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Here’s an extremely cool 70’s conspiracy tale with many beloved actors of the time doing an excellent job of scaring the audience to death with the very idea of a lust for power that is so great it overrides all decency. George Peppard (R.I.P) chills as Tuxan, the implacable, amoral investigator of the story. The late Michael Sarrazin is perfection as Tuxan’s quarry. The movie keeps us guessing, wondering who’s who and what’s what, right up to the end. We question what we see along the way, and what we think we understand as the plot unfolds. It’s one of those old movies that stick with you long years afterward, with a kind of unsettling relevance in the modern day. Yesterday I rewatched “The Parallex View” and got the same sort of vibe, all these years later, all over again. Recommended.

too bad that as the series progresses, she loses a bit of that Wednesday-ness and gets a bit more normal.. the makeup is less pale, and a tab bit more “make her look pretty”.. just hitting episode 6.. still rreally enjoying the show.. well written..good acting ..

YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I noticed that, too; even down to her adding a bit of white to some of her outfits along the way. I figured it was done deliberately to indicated how the situation and classmate-drama really was changing her severe worldview - just a little bit:-)

Wednesday (2022)
YgraineDance 5 points 1 year ago.

This is a super series which I almost didn’t watch because I feared it would be too juvenile. It’s not! It’s fun, has an excellent cast, is extremely witty - and respects the original show’s quirky characters even as it moves plot points forward to reflect present-day life. I’m so glad I gave it a shot; it’s very well done, and teases that we may see more of intrepid Wednesday one day.

The Parallax View (1974)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Do you love a good conspiracy movie? I do! Back in the day, there were some films I just had to see on the big screen, and never missed watching them when they came to TV. Films such as Blue Thunder; The Star Chamber; Narrow Margin; The Gauntlet; No Way Out; and this one. It’s intelligently told, riveting and scary. The lighting is expertly done, and some of the camera angles are unforgettable, almost Hitchcock-level great.

Warren Beatty stars as a cocky ne’er-do-well reporter who finally realizes something BIG is going on and it’s up to him to unravel it. But does he? Can he? Can anyone?

The music helps ratchet up the tension (a lot of 70s-80s films had notable scoring in this vein) but even better than that, the engrossing story unfolds with ZERO cell-phone presence since this was made before all that came to pass. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, yet in some ways strangely prescient film, have a watch.

The Killing Tree (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Yes, I knew going in that this was gonna be deliberately silly and cheesy like many a goofy holiday horror-comedies I’ve laughed with (Jack Frost 1 and 2, and Thankskilling immediately come to mind first).
I knew there’d be endearingly awful CGI and crazy kills.
I also knew we’d see insipid characters doing nonsensical things and getting whacked.
All this was predicted and expected; I went in to have a few laughs seeing a flick that was new to me.

What I didn’t know was that the sound dept. was so untalented that whole scenes were full of garbled, mumbled, Cockney-urchin speech often drowned out by noise passing for music. Replaying bits didn’t help much - the sound was just BAD. The tree did best with that.

My Massive Cock (TV Special 2022) (2022)
YgraineDance 4 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I’ve finally had the chance to watch this straight through to the end. IMO it’s not…I don’t know, quite what I suppose I was expecting. I guess I figured it would be more clinical than prurient (in spite of the thumbnail come-on!) And prurient isn’t exactly the right word, either. This is more of a peek into the daily lives and tribulations of pretty-ordinary-in-all-ways-but-one British guys, as they both enjoy, and regret, their most…singular…feature. A few of them seem, with dismay, to begin to be feeling what it is like to be ranked and rated, sought after and rejected, for the body God gave them. Dating prospects and relationships are affected. Not always a barrel of laughs - and their faces sometimes show us this dismal reality.

Of course, the show can’t help itself from doing some level of smirking, not just from the interviewees, but also from the narrator, trying hard to make sure we TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY! And generally, we do - but some decisions, such as the one to, for example, show some things clearly, then blur others, seem a bit odd. Is this purely titillation, or documentary, or some uneasy mashup of both? I felt this most keenly with the “swinger” couple. I couldn’t get a real read on them and (to me) they didn’t make a lot of sense. Watch and draw your own conclusions. These are just a few of mine.

Emergency Declaration (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

“Bisang seoneon” aka “Emergency Declaration,” is quite deliberately long, but is so involving and character-driven that it never seems slow or tedious. The actors are great, and make you feel what they’re feeling. You really need and want to see and hear all that’s going on with them, as it’s all important to the tale; nothing is filler, even at this runtime. The plot is simple enough, and there’s exposition as needed, but mainly this is all about the people.

The movie likes to engage us in lots of looooong scenes of heightened tension and emotions, longer than what we see in conventional Hollywood offerings - but this isn’t Hollywood, and you really can tell, and that’s fine. It’s all a big, scary ride getting to the conclusion, but along the way, we see fear, love, selfishness, selflessness, hope, hopelessness, madness, resignation, outrage, mendacity - in short, we get to see the human response to a threat. We are reminded that it’s not always pretty, but it’s always human.
Recommended! The English subs are excellent, btw.

The Terminal List (2022) S1 E8
greyfur 2 points 1 year ago.

I know nothing of the books whatsoever, at all. Thought that the series might have been taken from one book, or maybe a trilogy. Had no idea that there was a whole slew of them. Might have to look into that….

Have to admit that Pratt did a really great job with this, and would really like to see him come back in this role again.

YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

He really did well; I have to say I was surprised. (That’s on me; I’d only seen him in nutty stuff ‘til now.) Let’s hope for more of this good show.

The Good Fight (2017) S6 E10
YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago.

Bravo! WONDERFUL series, never failed to make you scream, laugh, moan, and curse - sometimes all of the above, all in the same episode! I’d love to see these characters again in their exciting future adventures. There sure are lots more ripped-from-the-headlines stories to tell.

Baranski and co. deserve awards for their performances, bringing all the right mood and emotion as they navigate some of the political hot mess we’re all enduring in our American reality. VERY clever scripting; 10/10!

The Terminal List (2022) S1 E8
greyfur 2 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Outstanding! The way they left it, he was dying, so I figured that they were going to end it there, but he (Pratt) did such a good job in that that I was wishing that there was a way that another season could be done with it. Hopefully the same writer that did the original book can do the next one, and they can make that into the next season? Either way, if they can keep up the same momentum, it will be great!

YgraineDance 4 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I think the way they get around the “dying” part is, remember, Reece never did get the biopsy the doc mentioned - he only got the diagnosis of a tumor. I guess they can say he survived an operation for a benign growth. I imagine book readers already know (but I haven’t read the books so I’m likely wrong.)

The Terminal List (2022) S1 E8
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

I watched this over the course of three days, and it was interesting and involving. Can’t argue with a good conspiracy-coverup-comeuppance film, even if unrealistic in many places. Pratt was restrained and serious in this role as Reece, a Navy SEAL channeling his outrage into action, single-minded and laser-focused. Unlike some reviews I’ve read elsewhere, I kind of liked the conclusion…and I have to say I suspected it would play out exactly as it did. Worth watching!

Accident Man: Hitman's Holiday (2022)
YgraineDance 0 points 1 year ago.

I love Scott Adkins in everything I’ve seen, and he and his crew are entertaining as all get-out in these Accident Man films. The martial arts skills are superb throughout! I missed a couple of characters from the earlier movie, but the ones who returned, plus the new addition, are hilarious as well as deadly. Yeah, that sounds odd to say, but it’s true. You will giggle right at some surprising, awful moments - and Adkins and friends make it work. I sure hope we get more, in the way of a sequel or two. These are the kinds of movies you can enjoy watching more than once.

p.s. Now I gotta go watch some Boyka…

The Serpent Queen (2022) S1 E8
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

A ripping historical yarn from start to finish! Such fun watching how intricate, devilish plans come together in Catherine’s world. Samantha Morton drives this show, bringing all the emotions in the rainbow - very often in a single episode. Amazing. The excellent cast delivers, and you really feel the “Oh-HELL-no!” when understanding dawns hahaha. “The Serpent Queen” is unbelievably clever and snarky, and I really hate to see it end. 10/10 stars.

Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

A very memorable fantasy film that modernizes and interprets the fable/fairytale of the otherworldly ship and its captain, cursed for all time. However, Ava Gardner has something to say about that. 😉

Recommended; watch and enjoy.

Blank (2023)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Yes, here’s yet another film about rogue A.I. and just how bad things can so quickly go from perfection to hellscape. It has some class, though, and stands out from many you may have seen. The movie takes a long time to move forward, even appearing to drone on a bit too long with scenes that “rinse and repeat” several times, but these are necessary as they place the viewer in the same headspace of despair and weary anger as the protagonist.

We see her daily routine at the retreat, which includes a lot of sleeping, jogging, moping, drinking - in fact, a lot of everything except writing her novel, which she came there to attempt to do.
Interspersed with these scenes are unpleasant, even harrowing, interludes with someone else, who also desperately wanted to write and receive recognition once.

I will stop here and not spoil the story - but I will say that my best advice is to stay with it, as the movie does have payoff that explains a whole lot about what we saw before. The actors, including the A.I. do a fine job, and the glimpses of English countryside are pretty marvelous.

La Brea (2021) S2 E4
YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago.

It would be so cool if this time-travel show was actually about time travel like it purports itself to be.

Instead, it’s always histrionics and soap opera. “We’re gonna do something and it’s really gonna be big - just not this episode.”

Next episode comes and it’s “YES, here’s a cryptic new bit of info and even more side plot, and now we’re gonna do something REALLY big - just not this episode.”

What are the writers doing, other than stringing this along…?

Murdoch Mysteries (2008) S16 E6

I love all the historical characters that pass through Toronto.

YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

YES that has been a great deal of fun! They weave them in so skillfully that you like to think “Yeah, maybe that could have happened.” :-) Same with Murdoch’s “inventions” that are so often spot-on tech ideas that we refined and use now. Cool!

Murdoch Mysteries (2008) S16 E6

I liked this unusual episode, set among the Mennonites. And Watts’ character arc is always fresh and surprising.
This series has been running for a very long time and still manages to entertain and offer a message - with a gentle hand.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) S1 E9
YgraineDance 4 points 1 year ago.

I had a ball with this series; lots of witty, funny dialogue and situations with just enough real-world hot mess mixed with the obvious fantasy. I know nothing of the comic book character, but I sure enjoyed the portrayal Maslany gave here. Some very creative minds behind the cameras as well as out in front of them. Good fun, Marvel!

Werewolf by Night (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

I loved it. Marvel continues to offer first-rate entertainment, some of it in blockbuster movie form and some in offbeat, quirky live action series, one-shots, and animations. I never heard of this one until today, and watched on a whim. The loving homage to brilliant horror films of the past is evident throughout, and has a satisfying chapter-type ending that could easily go forward in sequel form if Marvel should decide to do so. Lots of fun, with characters to root for.

Please, someone who’s followed this arc, can you explain to me, What became of Pilar, Wheatley’s second wife? He was nuts about her, but it seems like she is nowhere in the story and now it’s all about Angela all the time. Was Pilar divorced/killed off, and if so, when? And did it happen on this show, or on SVU (since they jump back and forth sometimes)?

Oh, it’s kind of fun. She’s intuitive and brings a little levity to her tight-ass team. The only character I really can’t get a handle on is her dad. His role just doesn’t seem…genuine, as a dad (although I love Faison in other roles he’s done.)

I am not happy about the cast change. After only five episodes. If they wanted to show the characters aging, they had the makeup. Did they think the viewers would not notice?

YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Agree with you. Things are just moving SOOOO fast - in order to get us to more of the damn dragons, I guess. Pretty soon, the skies will be full of them, readers of the books keep saying, with (confusing to me!) glee LOL.
I’d just as soon focus more on sensible character motives, but yeah…dragons, yippee, let’s fly more CGI dragons…yay

Karen Pirie (2022)
YgraineDance 4 points 1 year ago.

I liked this quite a bit. As this is set in Scotland, the accents of some of the characters are a little bit thick, but not terribly so. The mystery unfolds slowly, with twists and turns one expects from good Brit crime series in the vein of Unforgotten, Vera, Prime Suspect etc. Each episode is one and a half hours long. Worth a watch IMO. Three episodes wrapped up this mystery and I’m not sure if we’ll get more, as the main actress is also a regular on the recurring Starz hit, Outlander.

The Capture (2019) S2 E6
greyfur 2 points 1 year ago.

Yeah, I used to get real excited for the walking dead, then it started to kinda wane, and it just kinda petered out on me. Seems to me like the only one that I still find interesting now is Daryel (sp?).

That being said, ‘The Old Man’ was pretty good, first season, hoping they do a second one. I’ve been liking ‘For All Mankind’ as well, it’s an alternate reality kind of a show as to what would it have been like if things had have turned out differently back in the NASA days when we were going to the moon and such. All I’m going to give you, but it’s pretty good.

That being said, look up something called ‘Sherlock’. Only 4 seasons so far, and have been waiting for more, have not had the time (actually forgot to look, truth be told, got a lot on my plate at the moment, so the small stuff has gone right out the window at the moment), but about 3 long episodes to each season, and it has Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock, and Rupert Graves as a really cool Watson. A bit of a different take, but if you’re anything like me you will really like this.

I pretty much binged each season. Did the first one in one sitting, then knew what I was going to do with the others, so made sure I was going to have the time to do the same with the others when I got started, snacks ready, and chilled. Really good episodes, and lots of blindsides!

YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago.

YES thanks! I loved the quirky Cumberbatch version of Sherlock and watched all of them. Great stuff and he killed it as Sherlock! Had some real twists there toward the end of its run. (I wish he’d stuck with that instead of doing Dr. Strange stuff, but, whatever…)
I haven’t watched the others you mentioned but I’ll consider them, thanks. OH, and another great one I wanna see in season 2 is the Navajo Nation crime story called “Dark Winds.” That one is superb; left me craving more!
Good to see you and Greenguy86.

The Capture (2019) S2 E6
greyfur 1 points 1 year ago.

O.K. NOW I’m gonna have to watch it…Watched the 1st season, and it was right good, but never got around to the 2nd one. Been a bit busy, and have really cut back on a lot of my watching, have schedualed a lot of shows, but don’t really keep up on most of them. Now I’m going to have to try and scope this one out….

YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

I’ve cut back, too. I used to follow “Walking Dead” until it just seemed to be going nowhere (maybe they’ve finally moved forward with the great reveal, I dunno). I watched “The Americans” up to the final season, which I have yet to bother with. Same with “Ray Donovan”, which I never used to skip. I got so sick of Mickey that I just wandered off. I usually ALWAYS complete a series once I’ve invested time in it, but I’ve allowed myself a divorce from that habit and find other, better things to watch, and to read.
If “La Brea” delivers, great! That one has potential. Also, I want to see if Brolin’s “Outer Range” goes anywhere (it got a little David Lynch on me last season LOL).

The Capture (2019) S2 E6
greenguy86 3 points 1 year ago.

I would have to agree Series 2 definitely up the ante. For some reason it went by faster. I’d imagine it would be a while before we’d see a third series(if that were to even happen).

YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

You’re right about this season seeming fast, and yeah, if we do get another season we’re prolly in for a good wait. I was really satisfied by this, but I don’t know how popular it was overall.
Off the subject, but I see La Brea is about to start up again soon. Wonder if some questions will begin being answered on that one?

The Serpent Queen (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

This is such a warts-and-all historical dramedy, with snark and sarcasm all over the place. People, even the royals, are shown to have feet of clay, with all the meanness, insecurity, jealousy, and guile of humans in every era. A perfect vehicle for Samantha Morton, who can do “nutty and savage” like no one else LOL.

I notice more and more shows breaking the proscenium, with frank and funny asides to the audience at just the right times - so funny! I’m enjoying the ride, as the innocent receive their life lessons in treachery at the hands of experience, time - and the other SOBs they meet.

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S20 E27
Alien 1 points 1 year ago.

This was one of the best episodes I’ve seen in a long time. Starting from the end of Bill’s monologue (which always suck) to the end of the show.
I love the hell out of Jon Meacham. His brain is so big and he is so witty.
Bill has great reverence for him…even if he does believe in God.

YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Meacham is always a standout; he knows his subject back to front and makes sense of today’s chaos through careful analysis of past events. (Michael Beschloss is another such wise, affable scholar and a favorite of mine.)
Ioffe did pretty well here, too, I thought, holding her own as (sometimes) women have to do around Bill, who has developed a somewhat querulous demeanor as he ages. She said her piece(s) and made her points.
The show this week was a winner, as was the Overtime segment afterwards - and sadly, this isn’t true for Maher’s program very often of late.

Murdoch Mysteries (2008) S16 E1
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Murdoch’s back! This show manages to stay fresh and fun year after year. New intrigue is brewing for this season, as our lovable cast of characters returns with their own evolving arcs. Danger; parenthood; misunderstandings; duplicity; love - and murder, always murder!

And in addition to that, I’ve always liked how this show has a knack for breathing real-life authenticity into its characters’ personalities, while playfully integrating “What if?” scenarios into episodes involving historic events and people. Many times, we’re given clever in-jokes while watching, for example, some “zany” invention by Murdoch in the 1900s that perfectly predicts something we now use all the time today. It’s fun to say to yourself, “Yeah! Maybe _ could have happened that way!”

The Capture (2019) S2 E6
YgraineDance 3 points 1 year ago.

WOW what a great season ender this was!!! Double crosses, triple crosses, intrigue on top of more intrigue right up til the very end! Season 1 was excellent, but I think season 2 might have topped it, as the enormity of the tale’s nightmare scenario is now known to and understood by viewers. This season’s arc has wrapped up nicely and I HOPE we see a third - this premise has endless possibilities still to reveal, as the tech theory in the story is very topical and shows no sign of abating. A highly recommended, edge-of-your-seat watch!

Orphan: First Kill (2022)

The Most Dangerous Game (2022)
YgraineDance 1 points 1 year ago.

Damn. It’s pretty hard to eff up a most-dangerous-game plot, but this dreck manages to do it! There’s lacklustre directing and dreadful acting, along with inane dialogue delivered so poorly it’s like watching an unrehearsed second-grade play, PLUS way too much “let’s stand here and babble calmly when we should be hustling.” No one speaks like this in a dire circumstance. Makes your teeth hurt!!! This type of movie has the excellent premise going for it, all set to be exciting (hunting humans for sport) - yet this manages to be as thrilling as waiting for soup to warm up. HOW can you possibly mess this classic plot up?!?

~and p.s. Tom Berenger was absolutely unrecognizable:-/

Ridley (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Adrian Dunbar’s name in the credits drew me to this one; he is a strong presence in every show I’ve seen him in. He’s good here as a retired detective who is lured back to the job to help out, putting his singular talents to use - and he sings, too. (see what I did there? LOL)
I’ll stay with the show; I enjoy mysteries.

Shetland (2013) S7 E1
YgraineDance 5 points 1 year ago.

I’m so happy Shetland is back. It’s a rich, well-written, well-acted drama that has followed a cast of interesting and accessible characters for many years, via criminal cases and personal drama. Each season brings us back to what, by now, is a group of our “old friends” almost - and we can’t wait to see how they are at this point in their lives. The gorgeous locale is a star in its own right, just jaw-dropping green spaces beside immense deep-blue seas. Since the show has been on hiatus, I find that I have to re-learn the English-but-heavily-accented dialect all over again LOL but I don’t mind at all. This is an excellent show.

Little Demon (2022)

Irreverent, witty, off-color and wicked - this is animated BUT definitely NOT FOR THE KIDS so be warned!! Earns 9 of 10 stars from me.
