Project Power (2020)
magically_delicious 15 points 3 years ago.

This Netflix original is a very entertaining, easy to watch, and professionally edited semi-superheroes sweet treat. Jaime Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, combined with [relative] newcomer Dominique Fishback deliver on every level. I enjoyed its quirkiness and humour as well as its gore and imagination. Highly pleasurable viewing. 3.8/5

I think there are 6 of these shorts that are meant to be prequels to the Alien film from 1979 and premiered at the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, WA. The Old Guard (2020)
magically_delicious 7 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

“The Old Guard” is a very watchable and interesting fantasy, graphic novel adapted to the Netflix “big screen”. I didn’t particularly care for the “big villain”, but the writers’ didn’t take the predictable route in many of their plot choices and that makes this adaptation fun, gory, gritty and curious…and, certainly appears to be a trial effort towards a part 2 or Netflix limited series. Recommended. 3.8/5 Charlize Theron’s axe scenes alone are worth the watch!

Train to Busan (2016)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago*.

This is a rare, nearly perfect, film. Rare, because horror films generally don’t tick all the boxes in terms of a complete story-line that informs, engages and excites the viewer. This film does all that, and more. It is a story about a father and daughter, about the values the world imposes on all of us regarding what is successful and what isn’t. It’s a story of classes of people and how we form opinions according to what we see, not what we know. It has a heart, heroes and … absolute, twitching, bloody, terrifying horror. This is my third viewing of this film, and it never disappoints. I always notice something new, something the director took time to make just so. Horror lovers will fall in love with this film, even if they don’t like to read subs. Highly recommended. 4.9/5

NOS4A2 (2019) S2 E5
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago*.

Brilliant, non-stop visual story-telling-filled action sequences, and unique POV forward momentum fill this episode to the waterline. After the last episode, this is a refreshing bit of encouragement. Although not outwardly gruesome, it is full of violent sequences. In this episode, the viewer gets to engage and relate to the story on an individual level in every aspect, yet the story is very cohesive. 4.8/5 for this episode.

Parasite (2019)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago*.

This film reminds me of Legos, and how fitting the bricks together makes a unique creation. This film builds, brick-by-brick, to create…a series of questions. Who, or what, is truly parasitic in our world? The acting is remarkable. It is an intelligent, complex, and deliciously shocking film. This black comedy, thriller, drama is not to be missed. Highly recommended. 4.9/5

Better Call Saul (2015)
magically_delicious 8 points 5 years ago.

Simply, a brilliant series thanks to the multifaceted actor Bob Odenkirk (not to mention creative writing at its best, and solid direction) I’m on Season 4 episode 7 and realise now that season 5 will more than likely be the end of this series. I’ve decided to start rewatcing and cannot believe how much has happened and how rewatchable this series is. I would recommend it to anyone, not just fans of Breaking Bad. It’s simply brilliant. Thank you uplinkers and uploaders for the links!

I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2020) S1 E3
magically_delicious 5 points 3 years ago.

What I love about this series is how deeply it reaches into the interior of not just the rapes and murders, but all the individuals, including Michelle and Patton and their lives before, during and after. It is stirring to watch something that gives three dimensions to every aspect and every nuance, without nearly glorifying the murderer, as so many of this genre does indirectly. It is a revealing series that gives the viewer a type of identification that is contemplative on a very personal level. 5/5 for this episode

#Alive (2020)
magically_delicious 5 points 3 years ago.

This film has the Korean fast-paced, twitching, screeching zombie success that “Train to Busan” has. However, the story-line for #Alive is [primarily] about one survivour. What I enjoy most about the Korean zombie films like this one, is how well fleshed-out the characters are. It is something that is sadly missing from recent American zombie films, and horror, for that matter. This is an oddly relatable and entirely engrossing experience. Definitely recommended viewing for horror and zombie fans alike. 3.8/5

Dead to Me (2019)
magically_delicious 5 points 4 years ago*.

“Dead to Me” is an amazingly dark, yet touching, comedy that I would normally have dismissed due to the rather generic premise. This show is an unknown gem thanks to the talents of Christina Applegate (“Jen Harding”). Her timing, her facial expressions, her relatability, all take this series from a probable flat and uninteresting story, to a captivating and emotionally charged event. Paired with her is Linda Cardellini, who plays her role as “Judy Hale” to a raw and almost disconcerting perfection. If you are looking for something to watch that will captivate you, this is the show.

100 Days Wild (2020)
magically_delicious 5 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This show is one of the worst supposed survivalist shows around. Talk about your impracticable bunch of ill-prepared wanna-be’s. Give it a miss or have a laugh. They are so scripted and pre-screened to be weird it’s only funny in a “how stupid is this target audience supposed to be anyways?” kinda way. -10/5

When Sharks Attack (2013)
magically_delicious 5 points 3 years ago*.

I avoid sensationalistic animal series that vilify any animals, and especially sharks. This series surprised me, however. It’s very name, “When Sharks Attack”, put me off for a very long time. I’ve only just started watching (picking random episodes through the seasons from one to six). I realise now that this series is actually very informative and scientific. The research is carried out by multiple professionals (biologists, oceanographers, marine biologists, marine management specialists, selachologists, etc.). Their combined effort(s) make this show something other than what the [suggestive of sensationalism] title would lead you to expect. This series does not vilify the shark, it exposes the truth behind their behaviour and instincts. 3.8/5

The Head (2020) S1 E1
magically_delicious 7 points 3 years ago*.

I enjoyed this first episode. It was a bit wacky, but it has a creepy feel and good production values. Yes, there is a familiar vibe, but for a horror/supernatural junkie who needs a “lost in the Antarctic during the sunless Winter” mystery/supernatural fix, it gives a bit of nourishment with the possibility of more than that on the menu in the future. I will continue on before assessing the entire thing. 3/5 for this episode.

The Wretched (2020)
magically_delicious 7 points 4 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

“The Wretched” is not a big screen, cinema film, but it has substance. Whilst it appears to be television and PG13 quality on some levels, it is not. It has a lot of adult situations and drug use and dialog… not to mention cannibalism. So do NOT let children under 17 watch it without guidance. Whilst it does have some brazen continuity errors (it’s supposedly Summer, but the trees are barren of leaves) I definitely enjoyed it (even though I am a “vetted hard-core horror fanatic”). It is well-casted, the story-line is cohesive and the characters are vetted and relatable in their individual story-lines. It is not “big screen” (worth re-iterating again), but it casts a big enough shadow to be a quantitative and quality horror, without being something absolutely riveting. Worth a one time, and even two time, watch. 3.5/5

I See You (2019)
BellaMia1 -4 points 4 years ago.

First thing. WTF happened to Helen Hunt’s face? CLEARLY she had surgery, but unfortunately for her, it has completely destroyed her already expressionless face. I couldn’t help but think about the boy in the movie “Mask” from 1985, with Cher and Eric Stoltz. For ANYBODY who remembers her from “Mad about you”, this is NOT her natural look. And unfortunately for me, it distracted me the whole movie. Per se, it’s not a bad movie, but it could’ve been better yet. Some scenes were too long, and the drone shots, annoyingly too abundant. It doesn’t feel natural, it feel impersonal. Unfortunately, one couldn’t relate to any of the characters, for they were all nasty people. The “twist” was OK, not shockingly surprising. For me, I would’ve liked for the chronology of the storytelling to be different. In all, OK for a one-time watch. IF you can get pass Helen’s deformed, I-paid-for-this-s**t, newly acquired mask of a face. THAT’S the shocking part in all of this. And by the way, this was NOT horror.

magically_delicious 10 points 4 years ago*.

If I hadn’t have known Helen Hunt already as an actress, it would have been better for me (as the viewer). It was nearly painful to have her in the film as her face does not have any form of expressions, which is contrary to what the character is supposed to be conveying.

I think she was a very talented actress (“As Good As It Gets” is a an excellent example), and her face was not “paralytic” back then.

I was honestly wondering if she had Bells Palsy, so I looked it up, and that’s EXACTLY what happened.

It’s not plastic surgery, it is Bells Palsy. I feel slightly ashamed now at wondering what happened, but her ability to convey emotion on the level of an actor has been hampered, in my opinion. I don’t watch actors act to realise they are acting but to be engrossed in a story where I don’t think about things like this.

All in all, I am going to rewatch the film with this in mind. I do think the film picks up after a bit, but the mystery of this needed to be solved for me (having watched her career). It’s good for other viewers that know her career to be aware of this as well.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2020)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Riveting. 5/5 for a top-notch, true life crime series. Patton Oswalt’s devotion to his late wife’s obsessive work to find the EAR/Golden State Killer is an act of love and devotion. Although I am only 2 episodes in (only 2 episodes have been released) I find myself in a state of mixed emotions that range from shock, horror, awe, sadness, and the desire to see and hear more of Michelle’s work. HBO filmmaker Liz Garbus has made an amazing tribute to McNamara’s work and effort to catch this American buglar, serial rapist and serial killer. Despite the fact that in 2018 the police denied claims that this research was of any benefit. The rapes and murders occurred from 1974 to 1986 and Joseph James DeAngelo (East Area Rapist, Golden State Killer, etc.) wasn’t even caught until 24th April 2018 partially — at the very least — due to McNamara’s endless attempts and dedication/obsession to bring him to (some form of) justice.

Black Water: Abyss (2020)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Action?? Horror?? Drama — yes, melodrama, for certain. This so called Action/Drama/Horror was awful. Simply awful. It was one scene after another of interpersonal high melodrama…with a croc. The croc isn’t the main feature; the “issues” with the people are. The cast is also too old to be playing the projected age group of twenty-somethings. All in all, this film is annoyingly boring beyond consideration. What a disappointment. NOT recommended. 1.5/5

The Killing Season (2016)
magically_delicious 6 points 4 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This Crime series plays like a documentary. The two “leads” are documentarians themselves (Rachel Mills produced another documentary, “Hell in the Heartland: What Happened to Ashley and Lauria” 2019, similar to this one; Joshua Zeman produced/co-produced “Cropsey” 2009 and the non-fiction “Mysterious Skin” 2004). It is a very engrossing study on serial killings across the United States, and how mass murders, any murders, for that matter, are not mandatorily entered into a comparative nationwide database, even though one exists (ViCAP). This series consults not just WebSleuth participants, but the brilliant profiler Peter Brendt. I would love to see more of this type of show, if not a season 2. Highly recommended to all true crime buffs for its authenticity and watchability.

Monster Hunter (2020)
magically_delicious 8 points 3 years ago*.

This isn’t a movie. It’s utter nonsense…not even on par with the fantastic game namesake. Paul Anderson has made some terrible decisions, but this takes the cake; who takes the easy premise of the game and makes it….this unexplained and ridiculous “movie”. A movie should have interesting, fleshed out characters, a plot, realistic fight scenes (not just Milla making faces 😠 with cut after cut after cut (most of which aren’t even edited in well), and doing nothing even close to acting). Tony Jaa is the only reason to watch this piece of smelly poo. He saves it from being a F- to a C Thank you, Tony. You and the monsters salvaged what you could.

Doctor Sleep (2019)
magically_delicious 8 points 4 years ago*.

This adaptation from the book by Stephen King (of the same name: “Doctor Sleep”) actually works exceptionally well, despite the obvious alterations for “film”. Stephen King’s books traditionally do not work well as adaptations primarily due to the fact that he has a multiplicity of intricate characters in each and every story and book. However, this adaptation is both thoughtful and wise in its elimination of characters. This film is creepy, ghastly, crud, offensive and downright scary… Ewan McGregor holds the entire film together (much to my own doubtfulness), and his performance ensures that what would have been absolute tosh, migrates into scary and sinister malevolence and utter devolvment for the viewer. It is an excellent and scary watch…

Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond (2017)
magically_delicious 4 points 3 years ago*.

This interview-style documentary, that serves as this film’s narration, solely with Jim Carrey, is made of the stuff that turns personal breakdowns into life changing breakthroughs. It was shot in 1999 and released 18 years later in 2017, and occurs during the filming of “Man on the Moon” https://www.primewire.li/movie/310897-watch-man-on-the-moon (the biography about comedian Andy Kaufman). I would highly recommend watching the film and then this documentary. In my opinion, this is one of the finest and most contemplative documentaries (due to the combination of narration and film within a film documentary) I have ever seen. It may be challenging for some to watch for many reasons. For others, it will be completely cathartic, compelling and awakening. 5/5

NOS4A2 (2019) S2 E10
magically_delicious 4 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

All in all Season 2 was the worst edited, directed and acted horror show of its time. Episode 5 was amazing, and stood out as a “this is how you tell a story”…the rest, meh. I cannot recommend the television adaptation of this wonderful book at all. The boy who plays “Bats” is simply the worst child actor I’ve ever seen. If you pay attention, you can actually see them giving him his queues. Zachary Quinto is wasted in this Season. 1/5 for episode 5 (which should be considered a stand-alone episode).

Love on the Spectrum (2019)
magically_delicious 4 points 3 years ago.

Documentarian Cian O’Cleary has made a an absolutely inspiring and life affirming documentary with “Love on the Spectrum”. To say it’s amazing is an understatement. I have never watched a documentary of this nature and truly liked and been impressed by every individual I “meet”. This 5 part series did that for me. I learned so much from every individual in every episode. “Intimacy is easy.” ~ Jimmy. 5/5 for everything Highly recommended.

Wentworth (2013)
magically_delicious 4 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

After 8 Seasons, it is ultimately the caliber of the outstanding acting, and transitional phases that these women would realistically go through, that keep this show in a number one slot. No one, NO ONE, stays the same, they all evolve and do so with conviction. This show has it all; gore, horror, betrayal, love lost, love found, drug use, recovery, and “top dogs”. I couldn’t possibly illustrate adequately what a quality show this is. It is not a melodramatic piece of goopy, nonsense pie; it is a delicious array of savoury elements that leaves the viewer wanting more…even if their favourite is killed off/or otherwise. Highly recommended. Start from the beginning and watch how it evolves. It’s binge-worthy and contemplative. 5/5

American Monster (2016) S5 E1
magically_delicious 4 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This story is a heart-breaking tragedy. It’s not the story of a criminally, evil murderer, although the murder of Mark is soul numbing beyond words. How they didn’t have a psychiatric evaluation for obvious PTSD is unjust and baffling. Even in the footage from Paul’s interview (after the shooting) with the police, it is clear he cannot distinguish reality from delusion. It is a well-known fact that combat soldiers who are wounded in battle suffer from excessive trauma. This type of trauma leads to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or other mental health conditions. Further, PTSD for soldiers wounded in active duty often times includes psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions. I really cried during this episode. So much heart-break, and no resolution or accurate assessment of this horrific “event”.

Hunting Emma (2018)
magically_delicious 4 points 5 years ago.

This film ROCKS! I loved it on all levels. It has a really interesting storyline that has an excellent and fast pace, thorough background, and characters that draw you in. The characters has depth, which is something really lacking in most films today. This is a brilliant film for a strong, yet feminine, female lead; she does not need to become a man and fight a man’s fight to show her strength. It is in Afrikaans, but this language is incredibly similar in sound to Dutch, and German, and many times the words are similar to English. It is an easy film to follow if you need the subtitles, which are done in an excellent translation as well. Emma kicks arse!! I am so pleased to see the links here so I thank you uplinkers/uploaders. :)

Accused: Guilty or Innocent? (2020) S1 E2
magically_delicious 4 points 4 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

Truly sickening to think that this “game” prosecutions play has not one iota to do with any form of justice whatsoever. This is the second episode in this crime genre/series. It is well paced and chock-full of literal information on the case at hand; in this instance finding Danita guilty of starvation and attempted murder of her child. It is heart wrenching, so anyone considering viewing must be prepared to see how there is absolutely no justice in the American legal system (this series is based in the States and the legal system therein).

Yummy (2020)

I really enjoyed this horrifically satirical Belgian Action/Comedy/Horror/Thriller. For me, this was refreshing in nearly every way. It is a B-grade with high production values so very watchable. It is also mainly in English with English HC subs for the Dutch speaking bits. There really needs to be a sub Satire genre. The realism is palatable especially combined with the whole “zombie” premise. It is something refreshing for the horror/zombie aficionado wanting to avoid another repetition of the average zombified horror fare. 4/5 and highly recommended for a laugh and horrifyingly accurate look at where we are as a superficial “race” of beings.

Accused: Guilty or Innocent? (2020) S1 E1
magically_delicious 4 points 4 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This was a completely riveting and emotionally charged viewing for me. It goes beyond the run of the mill “Crime” genre and straight into Documentary territory. Bryan did not commit manslaughter. He acted completely in self-defense and is a victim of prolonged and extenuating domestic abuse. There are psychological and emotional reasons why he was the “perfect” victim, and that should have been addressed by the prosecution. What disgusts me is how the prosecution/justice system does not work to obtain justice. It is a twisted game of chess where getting any type of conviction, regardless of evidence to the contrary, is the objective and means a “win” for “team prosecution”. The outcome of this episode made me sick and profoundly sad. This is highly recommended viewing.

Knives Out (2019)
magically_delicious 7 points 4 years ago*.

“Knives Out” is proof that an average script can be transformed into an amazingly entertaining movie with the help of well-directed, talented actors who work together, and pull off a feast for the eyes and the emotions. I really enjoyed this film, it’s unique in that it didn’t go too far with its humour and become a parody. Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas are amazing for the viewer to watch, as is Christopher Plummer. This film is highly recommended entertainment for the end of 2019 viewing!

The Head (2020)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

Overall this is a mildly to moderately enjoyable farce. After the first episode, the continuity and factual errors become a nuisance. A glaring mark against this series are the continuous factual errors around actually living and going out into the sub-zero temperatures of Antarctica (going out into minus 40-60 without a hood on, excessive vulnerable body parts exposed, no sign of cold air when speaking, etc. etc. etc.). The clues that Maggie is one of Sarah Jackson’s two daughters is there from episode two. The rape scene that is about to turn violent, and leads to Sarah’s murder, combined with the subsequent haranguing over convincing and persuading everyone into collusion, was a waste of valuable screen time and felt counterfeit in and of itself. The last act, and last 8 minutes of the series, was hastily thrown in as we learn of Aki’s fate; murdered by [fake] Maggie to cover up the revenge plot. Truly, this would have been so much better if they’d simply stopped the obviously contrived and spurious efforts, and concentrated on keeping it simple. 2.8/5

Expedition Bigfoot (2019)
magically_delicious 6 points 4 years ago.

After watching 4 episodes of “Expedition Bigfoot” I have to admit I like it… for what it is. I’m most intrigued on how they got an actual Primatologist, Dr. Mireya Mayor, for the show. After some research I confirmed that she indeed did earn a PhD in anthropology from Stony Brook University in New York, although she also worked as a cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins in-between her Bachelors and PhD studies. She also was responsible for co-discovering another species of rare mouse lemur in Madagascar, as well as prompting Madagascar’s prime minister to establish a national park to help protect the new species. I felt like her addition was a good one to an otherwise staged, choreographed and highly techo saturated “search” for Bigfoot. I do not believe, or disbelieve. I look at shows like this for entertainment value and to score as to whether or not they are telling the truth in any respect at all. I love shows about Aliens, Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster… and any other rare and unusual animal, or even the staged hoaxes, IF they work their mysteries correctly. However, just like the so called extinct coelacanth (supposedly gone for the last 400 million years), there’s always the search, which can be quite entertaining, and with a bit of luck, interesting. I’d suggest binging at least 4 episodes at a time with this one.

This is an amazing black comedy that fits Jim Carrey to a T. It’s innovative, irreverent, touching, and thought provoking. Green Room (2016)
magically_delicious 5 points 4 years ago.

I love this film and revisit it every year since it was made. It’s a remarkably tense, violent, yet nearly apathetic look at man’s inhumanity to man and all living creatures. Patrick Stewart, Imogen Poots, and (not at all lastly) Anton Yelchin are superb and show the craft for which all actors should be known for; the conveyance of raw emotion.

In Search Of (2018)

Zachary Quinto played the young Spock in the Star Trek reboot, and is utilising his “claim to fame” with the Spock-like neutral voice of reason in this series which is also a lovely nod to the original host, Leonard Nimoy. After having watched 19 shows I can honestly say I really enjoy this show. I find Zachary Quinto has an incredibly soothing voice and is easy to watch. The subject matters are getting a little more diverse as well. I only wish the episodes were longer and that it had less “insert commercial here” repetition, but this is definitely one of my personal favourites now. I’m concurrently reading the namesake novel by Stephen King whilst watching this adaptation/series develop. I have to make note that this is one of the best (possibly the best, but I’m only 3 episodes in) SK adaptations to date. It is FULL in the most complimentary sense. From the musical score to the dialog and the way the camera literally follows each character, this series is being communicated in a way that is incredibly rewarding to watch. I am holding my breath though, there’s a long way to go. I would encourage any Crime/Horror fan to take a peek of what has been released so far. Here’s to hoping the excellence continues!

The Overnight (2015)
magically_delicious 6 points 3 years ago*. (Contains Spoilers)

This film (at its core) is about sexual exploration. There is full frontal male nudity, couple sex, swapping partners, group sex, drug use, a random, anonymous hand job to a complete stranger at a massage parlor, ETC. I completely disagree with the genre label of “Mystery”. To say it is a mystery is very misleading in and of itself. It’s not a laugh-out-loud comedy; it’s more uncomfortable, shocking and ironic in the tone of humour used. “The Overnight” is very reminiscent of the 1969 film, “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice”, which was also labeled as “light hearted” (and it certainly wasn’t). A lot of people will be offended at the “adult situations”, so if any of the above doesn’t suit, don’t watch it. I found it interesting, and I was strangely unable to stop watching it. It deserves a 3/5.

Ridiculous and insulting are the only way to describe this completely lazy ending.

I immensely enjoyed this series, and especially learning about the iconic Suze Randall who was Playboy’s first female staff photographer (and is also featured in the first episode).

I later learned that Suze Randall got into the industry by responding to an “attractive girls wanted” newspaper ad at age 22 (in the early 1970s when she was a low-paid staff nurse at St. George’s Hospital in London) and fed up with being broke.

This series also features is Erika Lust, a film director based in Sweden who works to create feminist porn. It’s an interesting look into women in this industry. It changed the way I view things quite a bit.

This series is one of the most startling and well presented out there. I’m not big on true crime series, so I set the bar pretty high, this one is horrifying and realistic in that it has endless amounts of actual police footage and interviews with witnesses and survivours. It amazes me how many of these crimes are in this part of the world… in a sick-to-my-stomach kind of way. Thank you uplinkers and uploaders for the links.

Alone (2015) S7 E11
magically_delicious 3 points 3 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

That was the most staged, theatrical play on the expectations of the viewer finale I would never have expected. Any viewer that watched Roland realised what a selfish person he was from the get go. Then he “admits” it via telling the viewer that in “training” for Alone, he refused to go to his mother’s funeral. Jump ahead, and suddenly Roland is admitting to treating his family poorly, his sister shows up and the theatrics begin. I have never in my whole life seen someone so uncomfortable with emotion, touching, or being close. From the looks of it, they did a couple takes of his sister hooting and hollering for joy. The parting shot of Roland shows a man who knows he has a part to play for an audience. This whole winning and coming to terms was unnecessarily over the top and contrived. The voice-overs for this whole season were pure sensationalism, and the “on camera” events were quite obviously staged. Roll back to Seasons 1, 2, 3, and 4 and Alone was quite a different animal. 1/5

Right, he [Justin] didn’t know what it was he was looking at from the cozy confines of his truck, so he shot it. Then, when they saw smaller ones (of whatever it was) he walked up to them and shot them, too. Blood all over himself with it’s “human-like” eyes staring at him”. These type of individuals make me sick — “let’s just kill it”.

This series is brilliantly and authentically acted to the point of feeling like a voyeur in the lives of Connell and Marianne. I was thoroughly engrossed by the book, and the film follows the book with dedication, until the ending. Although not drastically different, I do wish they had not changed it. The ending in the book would have had just as much impact, without changing the intent of the writer, which this adaptation most certainly did. 4/5

What makes this Documentary/Biography different from all the other pieces on Manson is the fact that it does not make him a sort of “criminal superstar”, like so many of these Documentaries do. The first episode seemed to be a mishmash of typical “Manson” remembrances, and somewhat followed the tone that sensationalised the murders in broad strokes. However the tone of this episode is completely different. It’s focus is on the people around Manson (including his mother, grandmother, uncle, etc. before his birth), the times they lived in, the institutions, factual records/evidence, prison time, as well as methods he learned and used to essentially manipulate and “win friends and influence people” — and to keep others at bay. Somewhat “dry” at times, it is none-the-less incredibly unique and interesting. I would definitely call this a Biography, and a thorough one at that. It is very well presented and narrated in part by Manson biographer Jeff Guinn, and people who actually grew up with Manson as they are now. 4/5
