Black Noise (2023)
YgraineDance 2 points 6 months ago. (Contains Spoilers)

It’s not a very satisfying story. Things do happen, but the script could have offered up a lot more to round it all out. I read a lot of posts from people who often say they enjoy movies that “leave some things to the viewer”- but that only goes so far. If there’s a sci-fi or fantasy element to a story, you want to be able to pick up on it, have fun, and run with it.
Regarding “Black Noise”, well, I honestly have to say I know no more of the actual story at the end of the movie than I did at the beginning. It’s that thin.
(I marked this review as spoiler just in case.)

I agree with Birdsforme this was surreal. I saw it years ago and was confounded.

Emergency Declaration (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

“Bisang seoneon” aka “Emergency Declaration,” is quite deliberately long, but is so involving and character-driven that it never seems slow or tedious. The actors are great, and make you feel what they’re feeling. You really need and want to see and hear all that’s going on with them, as it’s all important to the tale; nothing is filler, even at this runtime. The plot is simple enough, and there’s exposition as needed, but mainly this is all about the people.

The movie likes to engage us in lots of looooong scenes of heightened tension and emotions, longer than what we see in conventional Hollywood offerings - but this isn’t Hollywood, and you really can tell, and that’s fine. It’s all a big, scary ride getting to the conclusion, but along the way, we see fear, love, selfishness, selflessness, hope, hopelessness, madness, resignation, outrage, mendacity - in short, we get to see the human response to a threat. We are reminded that it’s not always pretty, but it’s always human.
Recommended! The English subs are excellent, btw.

97 Minutes (2023)
YgraineDance 2 points 11 months ago.

Rhys-Meyers always brings something interesting to his roles, so when I saw his name attached, I figured on some fun and exciting takes on a plane-in-jep plot. There are a lot of those around; some better than others, but with Rhys-Meyers and Alec Baldwin in the cast, what could go wrong? Well, this film does have some tense moments, some hard-to-believe moments, and several plot holes and a twist or two, but overall, you get the feeling of a pretty generic SyFy entry, sadly. It’s as if the viewer has come in in the middle of the tale; the minimal backstory that we DO get is choppy and piecemeal, and the story might have been more involving if we’d come into the lives of the protagonists a little earlier. Rhys-Meyers is the most captivating part of the film and he brings the whole production up a notch. I mainly stuck with it because I wanted to see his character’s story arc. Others in the movie, not so much. All in all, a one-time watch.

I’m not scandinavian but my understanding is that Icelanders tend to still use the patronymic naming system in the same way the entire Norse culture originally did. The rest of the Scandinavian countries use “surnames” like most of the rest of western countries. Many Scandinavian surnames are derived from the old patronymical names, usually in the masculine form of -son or -sen.

YgraineDance 2 points 4 years ago.

Ah! Thank you so much for the response. That helps me understand a bit better. I’ve asked some form of this question for awhile now, and you are the only one who knew something:-) I even wondered if -sson and -dottir could be in the various names of some siblings.

YgraineDance 2 points 3 years ago*.

I absolutely love the “Dr. Beck” movies. “Stalked by my Doctor” is the first one. I think there are like 5 of these in the franchise now. Roberts is a crazy delight in all of them. (The first four have “Stalked” in the title, but the fifth is called “Just What the Doctor Ordered.”)

Accident Man (2018)
YgraineDance 2 points 3 years ago.

Liked it! Lots of humorous lines in the film, especially in Adkins’s running narrative. He’s an excellent actor, and of course a phenomenal martial artist, and he’s selected highly skilled, dynamic costars to make this one of his best IMO. I have a real treat ahead, as I have his Boyka movies in my watchlist. Popcorn ready!

Fabulous series! I enjoyed every minute of it and could feel the emotion that Uhtred was conveying at the end, as he stood on the battlements of his hard-won homestead, remembering. This show was as satisfying as Vikings was IMO. Hats off to all involved in its production; highly recommended! I eagerly await the full-length film that’s coming.

Amityville Karen (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Update:
One look at the title tells us right off that this is a crazy stinker of deluxe magnitude, funny and awful. It’s like some zero-budget fan film. Actors read their lines poorly, or forget them altogether. The zany plot makes no sense - but I’ll give a perverse credit to the writers for trying to sell THE most tenuous relationship to the Amityville franchise, hands down.
Have yourself a glass of wine and attempt to sit through this travesty if you dare! The “Karen” here really is a meanie, so there’s that…
Cheers!

I love the show, but I’m pretty fair tired of the big tease.

YgraineDance 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I can’t square with much that happened in this movie. Every single character seems mental! You sit there and scratch your head all the way through, going Whaaat..?? And that ending! A Jason Voorhees-type character who gets shot, stabbed, and falls 100 feet but does not die? No consequences for the “victim” who lied her way into people’s lives, and apparently had been doing so for years? With multiple fake IDs and “souvenirs” in her possession…?

Creep (2005)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

Never saw this before, but when I saw that the talented Sean Harris, a fave actor from many other works was in it, I watched for him. He nails his role, makes you feel it - but the rest of the film feels more like a 70s-era movie than a 2004 one. Characters mostly doing silly, pointless running; idiotic decisions happening at every turn; emotions veering so wildly that they appear to be fake, etc. Several key plot points don’t make any logical sense at all. I know this is fantasy, but still…how did…??

IMO the better movie would have been the one we DIDN’T get - the backstory of the creature, which is just hinted at but not given. Now THAT would have gone somewhere! Oh, well.

Fine finale to a very loopy, odd series of events! I’m assuming this is a one-season deal, but I haven’t looked around for confirmation of this yet. IMO they COULD continue, but I’m fine with things the way they’ve handled the tale. Some surprises (as always with this show!) and no complaints with how it all played out. This series, and “Poker Face”, stand as two of the best newbies I’ve watched this year. Such creativity!

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S18 E28

Oh boy.. gonna be a tough one to sit through, not because of the guests (looking forward to Bernie), but there’s a lady in the audience that laughs way too loud and way too often, i’m only 1:58 minutes in and starting to develop cringe cramps, hope she turns it down soon..
EDIT: The guests were good.

YgraineDance 2 points 3 years ago.

WOW yeah, I came here to say much the same thing! I know Bill, and others who do jokes for a living. really need and enjoy the feeling of having an engaged audience—-but those people, I guess many of them crewmembers and other workers on the show, are just so loud as to come across as artificial. That one person who goes WOOOO! at each and every punchline is the worst offender, so loud as to drown out much of what follows! I thought it was some guy but maybe it was a woman. So damn loud. 🙁

Great episode. Looking forward to a second season.

YgraineDance 2 points 2 years ago. (Contains Spoilers)

I think the episode got something right when the ne’er-do-well son mended his relationship with his estranged mom, the cop, prior to her death. That seemed real and made story-progressing sense after their cave misadventure earlier. I liked it.
BUT the entire season still feels as if it might have been condensed into a mere 2-hour first episode. The cliffhanger isn’t fun. That’s just a subjective opinion.

A fabulously funny ending to a zany, uproarious series! I was hooked from the very beginning, years ago, and laughed my ass off every single episode! This is one show the Brits really hit out of the park, with lovable scene-stealer Grumio and his hapless mates stumbling and fumbling their way through life in ancient Rome. Perfect casting!

I wasn’t sure the show would be back after the pandemic, so I was really pleased to hear that we were getting this series wrap-up movie bringing the characters’ story arcs to a hilarious close. Delightful! 😊

One of the eight of Corman’s movies based on Poe’s works (okay, maybe seven - The Haunted Palace is more Lovecraft than Poe) with Vincent Price as a villain and Hazel Court as his mistress. If You like classical horror You should be watching.

Survival Quest (1989)
YgraineDance 2 points 5 years ago.

Good old fave from the 80s, with a simple, somewhat familiar plot that is enlivened and saved by characters you get to know, like and root for along the way. The story revolves around a group of city folks, one a parolee, who develop confidence and teamwork skills in order to survive when the odds are stacked against them in the wilderness. Several faces you know and love, like Henriksen, Rolston, Hammer, and a few others. A fun watch.

Real Time with Bill Maher (2003) S19 E22
CaptKSKS 1 points 2 years ago.

Cool as a cucumber, and he really caught Benny off guard on a couple of things.

Bill needs to stop inviting Ben on, he either gets destroyed, like he did tonight, or gish gallops his way through whataboutisms that hide his racism and antisemitism. I noticed he wore his Yarmulke tonight (despite not being orthodox) as a way to deflect the criticism that he is an antisemite.

YgraineDance 2 points 2 years ago*.

He’s a whiny little bitch, to borrow Maher’s oft-used phrase. When Nance laughed and commenced eating his lunch, the furious little thing let his mask of privilege slip all the way off, saying “I will comfort myself tonight, sleeping on my bed of money.”
Even Maher flinched. Nance just giggled.

Game over, arrogant fool LOL You done played yasself:-)

Lullaby (2022)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago. (Contains Spoilers)

This flick was up next on my list, so I gave it a shot today. I have to say, I wasn’t wowed by anything here. None of the main characters were very engaging; a couple of the supporting cast members had more memorable moments. The sound was somewhat uneven also, that is, until the kid was shrieking - THEN the sound was loud and (too) clear.😒 When the kid wasn’t going at it, the pet cockatoo was.
All in all, not much of a watch.

A twist in the plot came as no real surprise, but this then rushed along toward an unpleasant, unsatisfying non-ending, given all that we had seen with this family in prior scenes. Are the writers seriously intending to head for a sequel? Why couldn’t they have told THIS story well and wrapped it all up in a better film?

This is a riveting documentary record of what turned out to be a superb sci-fi effort of the late 80s. We learn lots of interesting facts from the cast and crew who lived through the whole wonderful process: the diving, the long hours, the amazing sets, and more. I notice there was one cast member who did not participate in this doc—-and no, I don’t mean the poor fellow who passed away. Bad blood w/Cameron, I wonder…

This little gem is from the days when sci-fi warned us against continuing all that dangerous atom-splitting stuff we were so good at. Things never go well for you when you mess with Mother Nature, and this movie blends in humor to make a lot of points. Though dated in costumes, effects, and the like, this is a fun, imaginative film that holds your interest, even if a few subplots don’t seem to go anywhere at all (the most glaring of these being a character who is introduced in a long, meaningful scene—-then never appears again.)
My brother and I used to watch this and other sci-fi movies and shows, and Time Travelers is still a fave, like The Day the Earth Stood Still and First Men in the Moon.

Oh, it’s kind of fun. She’s intuitive and brings a little levity to her tight-ass team. The only character I really can’t get a handle on is her dad. His role just doesn’t seem…genuine, as a dad (although I love Faison in other roles he’s done.)

He Belongs to Me (2021)
YgraineDance 2 points 1 year ago.

I have no words for how awful this movie is. Amateur hour all the way! Terrible acting, over-the-top nonsensical plot, and some of the worst sound-mixing I’ve heard. Dialogue is often whispery-quiet, then, when action and/or music starts, it cranks WAY up and shatters your eardrums if you have on headphones! Yikes.

This is very much an “I might look like I have some class but make me mad and I’ll slap yo’ ass right into next week” kind of movie. No one looks good here on account of that.
NOT recommended unless you’re looking for a clown show - and this review is coming from someone who sometimes enjoys goofy Lifetime idiocy. This dreck is way less fun than any Lifetime movie.

So true. He’s petty about it, too. Gets cross if a guest is more loudly cheered for a salient remark or joke than he himself is.
